The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation is hiring an Accountant III to join their Pierre, SD team.

The Administrative Services Division of the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) is looking for a motivated and skilled individual to lead the fiscal accounting functions of the department. This position works with the departments finance officer, along with the Cabinet Secretary and division directors, to appropriately spend funds granted from the state and federal governments. This position manages federal grants, oversees invoice and voucher processing, prepares the Departments annual comprehensive financial reports submitted to the State, and provides guidance to department employees regarding federal grant allowable costs. This position also supervises one employee and works closely with the other accountants in the division and department. This position will also be instrumental in assisting DLR with transitioning the Department to the new State Accounting system.

Occasional in-state travel and (option) for an annual out-of-state trip to attend a conference, as needed.

This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Labor &amp Regulation – Administration Services. This position is an office environment and does not offer remote work. For more information on the Department of Labor &amp Regulation please visit https://dlr.sd.gov/.

Licenses and Certifications:
Candidates do NOT need to be a licensed CPA for this position.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A bachelors degree or higher in Accounting, Business Administration, or other related financial field, and 3-5 years of progressive experience in Accounting required. Preferably at least 5 years of experience with South Dakota accounting procedures. Knowledge of federal grant management helpful, but not required.

Knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Federal Uniform Grant Guidance and
  • SD Annual Comprehensive Financial Reporting policies.

Skill to:

  • supervise, guide, and train employees
  • manipulate tables and pivot tables in Microsoft Excel
  • determine the priority and need to get tasks accomplished and
  • develop working relationships with staff both in the department and with other State agencies.

Ability to:

  • work independently and with minimal supervision
  • switch quickly between tasks
  • provide professional customer service, internally and externally
  • communicate information and guidance to individuals or multiple people in a cordial and professional manner and
  • effectively work with a multitude of software programs, including video/virtual conferencing.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
