This position is critical in supporting successful reentry, thereby reducing the likelihood of recidivism, and increasing safety for the public, staff, and incarcerated individuals. Working in collaboration with other re-entry staff the Reentry Coach is responsible for the implementation of programming designed to enhance the offender’s ability to successfully transition back to the community providing vocational and peer support programming, facilitating family reunification events, interventions, and collaboration with community partners administering and coordinating reentry curriculum including PreP (Pre-release Program), Thinking for Change (T4C), and Moving On hosting job fairs, mock interviews, and resume building and interview skills workshops and ensuring that each offender that releases has access to vital documents and a job placement packet.

This position will report directly to the programs major or as designated per facility.

Responsibilities Include:

  • implementing reentry programming for adult male inmates and parolees
  • working with other agencies to incorporate services in the reentry process
  • maintaining records of reentry program participants
  • establishing and maintaining program fidelity and evaluation measures
  • documenting program outcomes and making recommendations for revisions
  • operating the reentry program consistent with evidence-based practices
  • developing and participating in case staffing teams for reentry referrals
  • providing case management services for reentry participants
  • coordinating regular meetings with DOC, Department of Labor/Regulation, and other partners including technical colleges.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics
    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist
    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down
    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows
    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows
    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic
    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and may be exposed while on assignment
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
  • Willing and able to travel
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
  • recognize deficiencies in and recommend changes to policies, operations memoranda and procedures.
