Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit Founded in 1924, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science provides training, consultation, and research support services to faculty, staff, and students across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and beyond. Odum expands Carolina’s impact by providing education and support for planning, implementing, and disseminating research. We work to advance rigorous and reproducible research across the data, social and health sciences, while building collaborative, trans-disciplinary research networks. Positioned in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Institute is funded through state/university appropriations and grants/contracts led by Institute staff.
Position Summary The primary purpose of this position is to be the lead person in the transcription unit and perform transcriptions on an as needed basis. This job is nested in the marketing unit at the Odum Institute, which provides audio and video transcription services to researchers across UNC-Chapel Hill. The team includes this position, as well as two part-time student employees. They are responsible for transcribing audio, delegating projects to other team members, and proofreading and delivering final transcripts.
Audio transcription
- Complete audio and video transcriptions, strictly adhering to both client preferences and AP Style
- Review inaudible and imperfections in transcripts to ensure accuracy and professionalism in final transcripts delivered to clients are complete and correct.
- Proofread, copy and edit transcriptions done by other team members to support consistency and excellence in the final products.
Transcribe in an objective manner for every client, regardless of subject matter.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Must have excellent written communication skills.
- Must be familiar with transcription software and AP Style.
- Good team player.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Excellent time management skills and ability to juggle many deadlines at once.
- Good skills in Microsoft Word/Excel and Google sheets
- Comfortable with Microsoft Teams and OneDrive
- Familiarity with IRB requirements and data security is a plus CITI certification
