The County of San Diego Employees Retirement Association (SDCERA) has an opening for Retirement Disability Specialist

The Retirement Disability Specialist processes disability retirement applications filed by SDCERA Members and conducts investigations by compiling medical, personnel, workers compensation and other relevant records related to disability applications. The Retirement Disability Specialist works closely with County departments, attorneys and medical providers in assessing disability retirement and return to work issues and interviews applicants and other witnesses, as appropriate. The incumbent will rely upon investigative findings and analysis to make well-founded, evidence-based recommendations to SDCERAs Board of Retirement to grant or deny disability applications, while also meeting strict deadlines and ensuring successful follow-through and closure of all case assignments. A strong understanding of disability, medical and legal terminology is required in order to ensure compliance with County policy and retirement laws.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has a strong background in the investigation and analysis of personal injury, disability, or workers compensation claims for an insurance company, law firm, private agency or public entity.

Incumbents have excellent analytical, communication, case management and organizational skills are detailed oriented able to interpret both medical and legal reports to make sound recommendations represent the organization to both internal and external stakeholders and possess excellent leadership skills.

SDCERA seeks candidates who possess knowledge of disability retirement or workers compensation settlement practices, methods and procedures applicable laws, rules and regulations affecting the authorization of disability or workers compensation benefits and knowledge of SDCERA and County policies and procedures.

A background in workers compensation, risk management, legal or paralegal studies is highly desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelors degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in business administration, finance, economics, accounting or other closely related field AND,
  • Two (2) years of experience in a public or private agency (preferably a California government agency) in the direct administration of, or managing, reviewing, evaluating, investigating, and processing reports and claims concerning on-the-job injuries, job-related illnesses, or physical disability claims.


Note:
Additional years of experience as described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment.
