Job Description : Job Summary

The Level 1 Operating Room Assistant plays a key role in providing support for radiology staff and assisting with dally operations of the department while ensuring patients receive the proper exam prep, are transported to and from Radiology in comfort with proper medical support and are observed while on the exam table. This position will assist the technologists with data entry using various computer systems as well as help with maintaining equipment. Incumbent will answer phone lines in respective work area and patient care area. The Operating Room Assistant will facilitate patient transport services and provide other support as needed. The incumbent works independently, and work is referred to the supervisor when standard procedures or processes do not apply. The individual must perform calmly in stressful situations and interact with radiologists, clinicians, technologists, and peers in a cooperative, harmonious manner for maximum effectiveness.

The Level 1 Operating Room Assistant is responsible for providing general support and assistance in the clinical and non-clinical areas of Radiology. The incumbent works alongside other support staff and fully participates with the entire Radiology Team and participates in activities that clean, organize, and prepare all areas of the Interventional Radiology suites. In addition, but not limited to, the incumbent facilitates transport of supply items, instruments, and equipment. The incumbent in this role transports patients, transports the deceased, and transports specimens and blood products. Under the direct supervision of a Radiology Supervisor, the incumbent may assist with a variety of patient care activities. The position may also be instructed to perform duties by the ANII, Radiology Physicians, as well as the department manager. This position is also responsible for ensuring room turnover between procedures, maintaining, and organizing supply items, instruments, and equipment properly handling clean and infectious waste distribute sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment clean and hang lead aprons as needed document properly in various logs and provide other general duties pertinent to the department’s needs. The incumbent must be CPR required.

This position may perform duties in the Main Hospital, Ambulatory Care Center, 48x and/or satellite facilities such as PCH as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • General understanding of basic Radiology procedures and knowledge of Radiology equipment/supplies and drugs.
  • Knowledge of, practices related to the Radiology environment and of medical terminology sufficient to communicate effectively with patients and health care providers regarding services and procedures.
  • Ability to work safely in an area with ionizing radiation and/or high magnetic field and work in a very cool environment (computer area), moving and manipulating equipment with knobs and switches.
  • Ability and knowledge to ensure safety of patient, before, during and after transport.
  • Must be able to work quickly, accurately under pressure. Must be able to work/communicate with co-workers at all levels under stressful conditions.
  • Skills and ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment always exists. Act diplomatically and exhibit a courteous manner to patients and medical staff, and university personnel at all levels while performing work duties. Ability to present a profession! image and maintain composure when dealing with the public and staff using reason and logic. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, co-workers, and other departments. Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Skills and ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed. Complete working knowledge of, and skills to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Written and oral communication skills to provide Information, explanations, and Instructions clearly and concisely to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including Individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinic’s/department’s customers to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem Identify the resources available to-help solve the problem create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Decision-making skills to Independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached. Skills and ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Understanding to adhere to all UC Davis policies and procedures and Radiology policies.

Department Description

The Department of Radiology Is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation providing Imaging Services for adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to work flexible hours. which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and some overtime, as needed.
  • Must be able to rotate for evening, weekend, and holiday coverage per departmental staffing guidelines.
  • Must be able to travel to other UCD imaging facilities.
  • Must be able to work in a radiation area and wear radiation protection apparel, including, but not limited to lead aprons, glasses, and gloves.
