Salary: $3,589 to $4,539 per month (SR-13, Step C to I)

Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicants qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Duties Summary

Under general supervision, perform a variety of complex, sub-professional duties in support of professional fishery activities and/or supervise a small group of fishery aids and technicians and perform other related duties as assigned.

Legal Authorization To Work Requirement:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

BASIC EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: Experience requiring the ability to read, comprehend and apply written directions and a high degree of verbal skill. This experience may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work. There must, however, be evidence that participation was on a continuous basis but not necessarily on a full-time normal work basis. This experience may also be met by: 1) possession of a high school diploma or equivalent or 2) excess Specialized Experience as described below.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Three years of progressively responsible sub-professional or technical work experience in some phase of fishery biological research, fishery technology, fishery management, fish hatchery management, technical fishery operations, or any closely related phase of the fishery field.

Such experience must have demonstrated the ability to apply knowledge of methods and techniques of a limited range of fishery work characteristics and limitations of established fishery practices and techniques incidental, instrumental, laboratory, or manual skills and the ability to communicate and deal effectively with others read, comprehend and apply written and oral directions.

The work experience must have included propagation or culture, harvest, research, conservation, or management on fishery resources or to the determination, establishment, or application of biological facts, methods, techniques and procedures necessary for the research, conservation, or management of fishes and other aquatic animals, such as crustaceans and mollusks.

Examples of qualifying work experience:
1. Varied fishing experience which provided knowledge of such factors as fishing gear preparation, assembly and utilization fish habits and habitats and fish identification.
2. Fish culture experience (pond or hatchery) on an extensive commercial basis which required knowledge of fish reproduction, care and feeding and fish disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

SCUBA CERTIFICATION: Applicants must possess a current Basic Open Water Diver SCUBA certification, or a higher level SCUBA certification (e.g., Rescue Diver certification, Master Diver certification, Instructor certification, etc.) from a nationally or internationally recognized training agency.

In order to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position, applicants must possess knowledge of the physiology of diving and diving equipment, diving safety practices and procedures, emergency care management, techniques for self-rescue, and be physically fit and able to dive to depths of 130 feet using Self contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA).

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
A. Medical Examination: The incumbent, must pass a medical examination to determine physical fitness for SCUBA diving during the probation period.
B. Certification: The incumbent, must obtain a scientific diver certification within the probation period.
C. Drivers License: Applicants must possess a valid drivers license at the time of appointment.
D. Lift and Carry Requirement: Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 – 60 pounds unassisted, and up to 150 pounds with the assistance of another person and/or the use of equipment (e.g., hoisting equipment, hand truck, etc.) for heavier loads, with or without reasonable accommodation.
