Job Description : The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Ketchikan!
What you will be doing:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is seeking applicants for its Marine Sport Harvest Survey (Creel) Program. The crew will interview sport anglers and sample their catch as they return to harbors and boat launches. The information collected is used to estimate the effort and harvest of sport caught species and provide valuable information to guide the management of Southeast Alaska fisheries.

While an understanding of the Southeast Alaska sport fishery is helpful, experience is not required, and training will be provided. If you enjoy working outside, engaging with the public and are interested in Alaskas fishery resources then this is a great opportunity to gain experience and begin an exciting career with the Alaska Department of Fish &amp Game. The technician in this position will work 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week with 2 consecutive days off. This position will be filled from mid-May to mid-September.

Our organization, mission and culture:
The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect and improve the states sport fishery resources. The Division of Sport Fish conducts marine harvest surveys in southeast Alaska for Chinook/coho salmon, halibut, rockfish, and lingcod and fulfills obligations to the Pacific Salmon Treaty and other international fisheries treaties. This position is vital to the data gathering and success of the project which enables the fisheries to be managed at a high level.

The working environment you can expect:
Daily work environment includes working at local harbors/boat launches conducting interviews with marine sport anglers and obtaining biological information. The work is done in all weather conditions. A variety of fish species will be encountered, identified, measure, and examined for tags. All data will be entered on user friendly iPads.

Special Note:
  • Valid Drivers License Required.
  • This position will require working outdoors, often in inclement weather and while sampling on Ketchikan docks. You must be able to lift 40 pounds without difficulty and carry bulky equipment while sampling.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development) 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week) 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
