The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Montana Mental Health Nursing Care Center.


The Montana Mental Health Nursing Care Center (MMHNCC) provides nursing and psychiatric care for persons with a mental disorder that renders him/her unable to be served appropriately in a community setting. It is licensed as a 100-bed nursing facility.


The Administrator position provides leadership and direction for the facility operations including medical, clinical, quality, strategic planning, fiscal oversight, business and support services, human resources, and maintenance and security. Key responsibilities of this position include ensuring the facility achieves and maintains compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, operational policies, procedures, licensure, certification, and accreditation standards monitoring expenditures within the budget appropriation and monitoring the facility’s changing operational demands, budgets and allocating resources and overseeing the ongoing administration of nursing and clinical support program services.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity


  • Knowledge of nursing home administration including federal and state regulations.
  • Knowledge of contract administration, quality control practices, and public relations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking skills.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the financial and budget activities to fund operations and increase efficiency.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing high-profile, sensitive or controversial issues.
  • Ability to motivate staff and provide effective leadership.
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, human services, business, or another healthcare related field.
    • Master’s in nursing home administration or related healthcare administration field, including an internship/residency requirements of at least 480 hours in a SNF or ICF is preferred.
    • Eight years of professional experience in hospital or facility administration.
    • Three years of experience directly managing professional staff.
    • Montana Nursing Home Administrator License Preferred (Required within 6 months of hire)
    • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Information


This position may be eligible for partial telework within the state of Montana. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.


This position may be eligible for a statutory 4% an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2024.


This position may be eligible for moving and relocation reimbursement. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to DPHHS policy.
