Description and Functions





GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

As Chief Administrator of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, this position is responsible for a nationally recognized staff of approximately 415 permanent employees and an annual budget of 102 million dollars.

  • Under the direction and supervision of the Game and Fish Commission, provides direction to a department overseeing an unparalleled variety and abundance of wildlife resources.
  • Provides general supervision and control of activities, functions, and employees in a high-quality-of-life environment
  • Shall hold office at the pleasure of the Governor.
  • Devotes 100% of the time to performance and supervision of duties conferred by the Commission and by law.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:

Wyoming Statute 9-2-2010(b) and Wyoming Statute 23-1-402(a) specify that the individual selected by the Commission and Governor be qualified and competent. Preference may be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

(1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and demonstrated increasingly responsible leadership in the field of fish and wildlife management.
(2) Extensive management administrative experience, which includes the supervision of numerous professional-level staff.
(3) Development and implementation of long-range plans, policies, objectives, multi-faceted budgets, and human resource management plans.
(4) Excellent skills in leadership, negotiation, conflict resolution, consensus building, and public relations.
(5) Proven written and oral communication skills.
(6) Ability to function effectively in a complex political environment with a broad range of public entities, interest groups, and various governmental entities with roles in natural resources management.

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge of current practices in wildlife management
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and practices of government management, including budget development and control
  • Knowledge of processes of state government, including legislative and administrative processes
  • Knowledge of Wyomings current cultural/social trends and attitudes of the citizens in relation to wildlife resource management
  • Skill in facilitation and small and large group communications
  • Skill in oral and written communications, including public speaking
  • Skill in interpersonal relations
  • Skill inability to demonstrate leadership abilities
  • Skill in successful personnel management

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Travel is required. Must have a valid drivers license.

NOTES:
  • FLSA: Exempt
  • This is an AT-WILL position, which serves at the pleasure of the Governor. (a) The governor shall appoint a competent person as the director of the department as provided in W.S. 9-2-2010 at a salary determined by the commission, not to exceed the sum set by law. (b) The director shall hold office at the pleasure of the governor and may be removed by him as provided in W.S. 9-1-202. (c) The director is the chief administrative head of the department with general supervision and control of all activities, functions, and employees of the department, under the direction and supervision of the commission. They shall devote their entire time to the performance and supervision of the duties conferred on them by the commission and by law.
