Description

This position performs under general supervision, conducts research, interprets, prepares, analyzes, and disseminates information relevant to actual and anticipated criminal activities and relationships, to increase the effectiveness of patrol deployment, crime prevention, and the apprehension and prosecution of criminal offenders.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions :

1. Research and analyze information relating to criminal activities and relationships.
2. Research, collect, analyze, evaluate, and compile data from a variety of sources to discover patterns, trends, and changes in criminal activity.
3. Utilize and update various databases and software to analyze and interpret crime data related to crime series, patterns, and suspect profiles by retrieving, sorting, and entering information.
4. Create reports on criminal activity, changing crime trends and patterns, and maintain case files for investigators as well as relay crime notifications throughout the department for patrol.
5. Use methods such as link analysis, financial analysis, application of the scientific method, production of matrixes, etc. to support the efforts of line officers and investigators.
6. Use geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze, visualize, and disseminate information related to crime analysis, resource utilization, as well as assess organizational effectiveness.
7. Perform a variety of statistical analysis to develop statistical information indicating crime trends and patterns of criminal activity.
8. Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies, city departments, and other entities as required.
9. Utilize and maintain existing departmental software programs to gather quantitative and qualitative data to increase the effectiveness of patrol deployment.
10. Identify areas of the city where various types of criminal activity are increasing. Assist with creating strategies for addressing problem areas.
11. Generate various reports, bulletins, and maps identifying criminal activity, suspect information and crime trends for investigators.
12. Participate in public speaking engagements relaying intelligence reports/data analysis to law enforcement groups/entities
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge: City government operations and organization Operations, policies and services of the Police Department knowledge of research and data analysis methods and techniques criminal justice and law enforcement investigative process in order to determine the data and analysis needed for support Knowledge of research, investigation, and analytical practices used in the acquisition and dissemination of criminal intelligence information advanced knowledge of statistics and analysis and geographic area Principles and practices of public relations Multi-media, multifaceted community orientated communication strategies and techniques Computer technology and television broadcasting principles and practices Modern and complex principles and practices of program and project development Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, fax and e-mail.

Skills: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing researching, gathering, organizing, and analyzing data and drawling logical conclusions skills in identifying problems, analyzing alternatives, and making viable recommendations, personal computer operation and in application of associated software Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

Abilities: Exercise sound judgement in safeguarding/disseminating confidential or sensitive information, and maintain confidentiality collect assemble, analyze, and evaluate evidence, reports, statistics, and other pertinent information to draw logical conclusions in order to effectively solve crimes read understand, and interpret federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to law enforcement and crime analysis prepare graphs, charts, tables, and other illustrative devices Coordinate, organize and execute various projects Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions Prioritize, organize and perform work independently and under pressure Prepare clear and concise project reports Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Supplemental Information

Experience :
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in crime analysis work, or related statistical research or any combination of education, training, and experience.

Education or Training :
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or closely related field.

License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid drivers license
Ability to obtain CJIS Certification within six (6) months of appointment and maintain certification thereafter.
Ability to obtain a Basic Analyst Classification certification within one (1) year of appointment and maintain certification thereafter
