The City of Gaithersburg Police Department is accepting applications for a Crime Analyst to collect, compile, examine, analyze, report, and disseminate information concerning crime trends and forecasts within the Gaithersburg area. This is a civilian position assigned to the Departments Special Operations Bureau. The approximate start date for the position is anticipated to be August 5, 2024.

The Crime Analyst performs a variety of functions involved in analyzing and reporting findings on criminal activity, crime trends, patterns and series, and other related statistical data and information in support of crime prevention and suppression efforts. Information identified by the Crime Analyst assists the Department in the deployment of resources, aids the investigative process, and assists with increasing apprehensions and clearing cases. To be successful in this position, you must demonstrate excellent analytical, problem solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail be proficient in or have the ability to quickly learn computer program applications commonly used in law enforcement and data analysis and be able to effectively organize work, establish priorities, manage time, and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision.
Anticipated starting salary for this position is negotiable within the target hiring range ($74,000 to $81,000) and will be offered at a level consistent with the relevant experience and qualifications of the candidate. Job Functions

What you will do with us:
  • Create statistical reports by extracting, compiling, organizing, reviewing, and comparing incident reports, Computer Automated Dispatch (P1 CAD), and other documents and enter pertinent information into ongoing databases.
  • Review, analyze, investigate, and integrate statistical information identify and make conclusions regarding crime series, patterns, trends, hot spots, changes in criminal activity, suspects, etc. prepare predictions based upon previous reported activity and an analysis of typical behavior patterns.
  • Communicate and report statistical information, findings, or recommendations to supervisory and management staff, department personnel, and other police agencies.
  • Write and distribute bulletins and alerts to police officers and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Perform tactical analysis involved in the recognition and identification of series related crimes including burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, and robberies.
  • Conduct and evaluate searches of databases and other information systems to assist in locating suspects and victims and to identify stolen property.
  • Develop, prepare, and generate crime summaries, periodic statistical reports, spreadsheets, charts, maps, diagrams, graphs, and related materials to track, document, and present findings related to criminal activity, patterns, and trends.
  • Prepare formal presentations and computer generated maps to disseminate information and present data and findings to various audiences and groups.
  • Research and advise management on needs and requirements related to statistical data processing information systems and tools and the retention of appropriate data.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:
  • Associates Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Mathematics/Statistics, Public Administration, or related field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in statistical analysis and research.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and experience using (or ability to quickly learn) program applications such as P1 CAD, ArcGIS, LexisNexis, and CrimeNtel.
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to write clear and accurate technical reports.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills in analyzing data, trends and patterns to spot problems and interpret their impacts
  • Ability to quickly develop a working knowledge of the Citys geography, as well as the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the City.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the job.

This is a full-time salaried exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week (not eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Citys personnel regulations). The position can accommodate some remote work (at the discretion of the Police Chief). Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.

The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation, including a comprehensive background investigation required for civilian employees of the Gaithersburg Police Department.
