GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Bridge Inspector 3 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a Bridge Inspector 3, you will be responsible for performing various duties, under limited supervision, in order to provide a safe, high quality, and efficient transportation system.

Inspect bridges, overhead sign structures, high mast light poles, and other highway related structures in accordance with the Federal Highway Administrations National Bridge Inspection Standards to collect and record structure information for future record and public safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
  • Assists in performing routine field inspections, fracture critical inspections, and/or special inspections of existing, recently constructed, and damaged local and state owned bridges and other related structures, including overhead sign structures, and high mast towers
  • Assists the lead inspector of a bridge inspection team
  • Prepares for inspections by reviewing structure files, identifying structure components and elements, and accounting for special considerations
  • Ensures inspections accurately and completely reflects the structural and functional conditions of the structure, are thorough, timely, and completed in accordance with WYDOT policies, procedures and the FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards
  • Prepares detailed structure inspection reports with photos in accordance with the Federal Highway Administrations National Bridge Inspection Standards
  • Uses non-destructive testing methods to assess damage as required
  • Records various measurements and take photographs for use in load ratings or developing the repair strategies
  • Uses computer-aided drafting to transform field sketches and measurements into detailed plans for engineering evaluation of load capacity of the structure and for future reference
  • Prepares other related data for transmission to local government officials
  • Verifies completeness of detail sketches made by others

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to candidates who have completed the National Highway Institute (NHI) Course No. 130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges.

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge of National Bridge Inspection Standards, bridge elements, Department procedures, practices and policies for inspecting structures
  • Knowledge of drafting principals, practices, techniques and standards that relate to structural detailing
  • Knowledge of computer aided drafting software (Microstation), word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Knowledge and ability needed to operate inspection equipment
  • Ability to climb on structural members and access bridge components that require close inspection
  • Ability to produce clean, legible and understandable drawings in the field and convert to CADD details
  • Ability to convey verbally and in written format accurate descriptions of structural damages and give direction to other members of the bridge inspection team

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associates Degree (typically in Civil and Environmental Engineering) Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (Transportation occupational group and Laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis Technician OR Education &amp Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in a Transportation occupational group and Laboratory) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Field Data Collection and Lab Analysis Technician Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb fences, occupy a bucket or lift truck for long periods of time, traversing uneven, steep, soft, slippery terrain
  • Ability to access structural elements in confined or limiting spaces
  • Ability to perform inspections and in periods of inclement weather, road closures, high or fast moving water, and periods of limited access or visibility
  • Ability to access bridge components that require close inspection
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Extensive travel required

  • **Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus
    • Acceptance of a permanent full-time non-exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment
    • Temporary employees accepting a full-time or part-time permanent position
    • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity – recruitment must have been opened to the public
    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12 month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
