Job Description : Initial Posting Date: 04/25/2024 Application Deadline: 05/09/2024 Agency: Parks and Recreation Department Salary Range: $3,776 – $4,985 Position Type: Employee Position Title: Seasonal Park Ranger 1 – Succor Creek Job Description: Would you enjoy working on a team where you can use your excellent customer service skills and develop hands-on experience in park maintenance and operations? In this position, you’ll be performing remote field work focusing on hands-on maintenance and rule enforcement. Come join our team at Succor Creek State Natural Area in Eastern Oregon near the Idaho border and support one of Oregon’s greatest resources – State Parks! This recruitment announcement will be used to fill one seasonal vacancy and future vacancies for Succor Creek State Natural Area . This position falls under the classification Park Ranger 1 . What is a Seasonal Park Ranger? We recruit for Seasonal Park Ranger positions each year. These positions generally work during our busiest time of year, April through September, when visitors flock to enjoy our beautiful parks. However, each park is unique and the duration of seasonal positions varies slightly from park to park. What you will do: As a seasonal Park Ranger 1, youll be on the front lines of park safety, maintenance, and visitor services. You’ll perform: Park Patrol, Safety, &amp Rule Enforcement
  • Patrol park areas to protect and preserve resources and facilities by checking for misuse, undesirable activities, and hazardous situations
  • Seek voluntary visitor compliance with park area rules and regulations issue verbal and written warnings as necessary
  • Render emergency aid and assistance to park visitors and prepare related reports
Custodial, Landscape, &amp Facility Maintenance
  • Clean rest rooms, and various park buildings including pumphouses, outbuildings and maintenance shops
  • Collect, and properly dispose of garbage and waste
  • Plant vegetation, mow lawns, and maintain irrigation systems
  • Prune trees and shrubs using manual and power tools, as well as apply fertilizers and pesticides
  • Construct, maintain, and repair fences, outbuildings, barns, hiking trails and sign structures using hand and power tools
Visitor Services &amp General Park Operations
  • Provide information about local attractions, park rules, and regulations to visitors
  • Coordinate work with agency partners including BLM, County and State departments as well as Friend’s groups and neighboring ranch leaseholders
Additional Duties
  • Building maintenance and construction
  • Utility system maintenance and construction
  • Resource interpretation and conservation

  • Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs special events and activities etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
OR
  • An Associates degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs special events and activities etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment.
What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):
  • Professional experience operating tools, equipment, 4×4 vehicles, ATVs and boats.
  • Experience in rule enforcement and generating voluntary compliance in a park setting.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a professional parks team setting.
  • Experience cleaning restrooms, maintenance shops and offices.
  • Ability to work independently in remote wilderness park setting
  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
  • Skill in overnight campground operations including but not limited to computer knowledge, camper registration, cash handling, dealing with customer complaints, providing exceptional customer service, end of shift reports, and reconciling paperwork.

  • The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
