The starting pay range for this position is $19.57-$25.89 hourly

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services has a full time vacancy for Public Health Laboratory Scientist I. This is a grant-funded position and is subject to renew every two years.

SUMMARY:

Analyzes and reports results on food samples in support of public health activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs laboratory tests on food samples for both natural and anthropogenic radioisotopes to generate quality data from which conclusions can be drawn on important public health issues or on environmental studies in the state. maintains flexibility to cope with assignments that may vary from day to day depending on workload.

Maintains, documents, and evaluates quality control to assure accuracy of test results to meet federal and state criteria.

Enters data into Laboratory Information Management System to accurately track testing process.

Operates, and maintains, laboratory equipment and apparatus to provide quality assured laboratory test results and to assure timely performance of analyses. Assures compliance with laboratory procedures

Participates in proficiency testing, and other quality assurance activities, to assure individual competence in accordance with the Public Health Laboratories’ guidelines.

Trains laboratory helpers and assistants and assists the oversight of trainees to assure proper operation of instruments and testing according to protocol.

Prepares reagents and maintains inventory. Understands and follows all laboratory safety rules to protect self and co-workers

Actively participates on laboratory committees, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors degree from a recognized college or university with major study in the biological sciences, health sciences, or physical sciences.

Experience: One year of experience in a laboratory performing duties similar to the assignments of the laboratory in which the vacancy is located.

License/Certification: For positions in the Division of Public Health Services, applicants must meet certification requirements of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (CLIA ’88).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Visual deficiencies must not interfere with ability to perform laboratory analyses. Superior manual dexterity and coordination required. Must be willing and able to handle samples known to contain toxic chemicals such as carcinogens.

Works flexible hours when the public health situation demands.
