Class Definition

Supervision Exercised: As required, may supervise the work of subordinate technical personnel and others assigned to assist.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a superior with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment receives detailed instructions on some complex assignments work is subject to review usually upon completion for proper application of network management techniques.
Classification Summary: To perform a variety of complex technical support tasks related to the operation and maintenance of wide area and local area networks and to do related work as required.


Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

  • The individual in this role will be tasked with performing a wide range of complex technical support duties directly related to the operation of both wide area and local area networks.
  • The role entails the installation and troubleshooting of network equipment across diverse client/server operating system environments, necessitating adeptness in intricate technical procedures.
  • Perform and monitor daily data backups and report any problems to supervisor.
  • Offer comprehensive support for mobile technology integrated within division vehicles, encompassing laptops, printers, power supplies, and associated peripherals. This includes installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure seamless functionality and optimal performance of all equipment while in transit or deployed for operational tasks. Additionally, responsibilities entail conducting regular inspections, updating software and firmware, and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to address emerging needs and technological advancements effectively.
  • Generate comprehensive reports detailing the status of division equipment across all locations on a yearly, monthly, and daily basis. Additionally, maintain an up-to-date inventory of all division technical assets, meticulously tracking their deployment, utilization, and maintenance history. This includes conducting regular audits to ensure accuracy and completeness of the inventory records, as well as identifying any discrepancies or areas for improvement in equipment management practices.
  • Facilitate the provision of mobile system support for various DPS (Department of Public Safety) agencies, ensuring seamless integration, functionality, and maintenance of mobile technology solutions across the organization. This entails offering technical assistance, troubleshooting, and guidance to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of mobile systems utilized by different DPS agencies. Additionally, collaborate with stakeholders to address specific requirements, optimize system performance, and implement best practices for mobile technology deployment and utilization across the DPS network.
  • Oversee the management of Verizon Wireless phones and air cards for mobile use within the organization. This involves tasks such as provisioning new devices, activating services, configuring settings, and ensuring proper functionality. Additionally, responsibilities include monitoring data usage, troubleshooting technical issues, coordinating device upgrades or replacements, and maintaining accurate records of device inventory and associated service plans. Furthermore, collaborate with Verizon representatives to address account-related matters, negotiate service agreements, and stay abreast of new technologies and offerings that could benefit the organizations mobile communication needs.

Illustrative Examples of Temporal Tasks Performed:
  • Provide troubleshooting and maintenance support for the Rhode Island State Police (RISP) Fleets mobile systems, including laptops and associated equipment. This involves diagnosing and resolving technical issues, performing routine maintenance tasks such as software updates and hardware inspections, and ensuring the proper functioning of all mobile systems used within the fleet. Additionally, collaborate with other technical personnel and vendors to address complex issues, implement system upgrades, and optimize the performance and reliability of the mobile systems. Regularly conduct proactive checks and tests to identify potential problems before they escalate, and keep detailed records of maintenance activities and system configurations for reference and analysis.
  • Manage the maintenance, installation, and configuration of IT equipment at Headquarters and various locations across the state. This includes ensuring the functionality and performance of computers, servers, networking devices, peripherals, and other IT infrastructure components. Tasks involve conducting regular inspections, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, installing new hardware and software, and configuring systems to meet organizational requirements. Additionally, collaborate with stakeholders to assess IT needs, plan equipment deployments, and implement technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency and support the mission of the organization. Keep meticulous records of equipment inventory, maintenance activities, and configuration changes to ensure compliance with standards and facilitate effective asset management.
  • Manage the installation and maintenance of software on PCs, as well as the upkeep of hardware, including printers, by patching and replacing broken components as needed. This involves deploying software applications, updates, and patches to ensure the security and functionality of PC systems. Additionally, conduct regular hardware inspections to identify and address issues such as malfunctioning components or peripherals. When necessary, troubleshoot hardware problems, perform repairs, and replace faulty parts to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance. Coordinate with vendors or service providers for hardware repairs or replacements beyond in-house capabilities.

Required Qualifications for Appointment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other (KSAO): A thorough knowledge of data communications networks, their operating systems, and their operational and systems capacities a working knowledge of the equipment used to support data networks in a combined client/server computer environment. The ability to install and troubleshoot a wide variety of network and computer peripheral equipment the ability to provide technical support to all areas of data network operation and related capacities and abilities.
Education and Experience:
Education: Such as may have been gained through graduation from a junior college or technical school of recognized standing including or supplemented by successful completion of courses in network management and computer operation.
Experience: Such as may have been gained through employment in a technical position involving the installation, evaluation, and diagnosis of network and telecommunications equipment.
Or, any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Rhode Island State Police.
