Basic Function

The current vacancies are in various Ramsey County Libraries. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.
Ramsey County Library is hiring for various permanent and intermittent Library Associates in our organization. Intermittent positions are as needed to cover open shifts at various library’s which include nights and weekends. Current openings for permanent position are at the following branches:
  • Digital Services (Systemwide)
  • White Bear Lake
  • Intermittent
The basic functions of this position are to provide assistance to library patrons at reference or service desks by answering information and account queries, processing library card applications and payment of library fees, by providing basic instruction in the use of library technology, and by assisting patrons in placing requests assess community members’ access to technology and current digital skill level pertaining to what they need to accomplish their goals provide digital navigation, by scheduling and instructing public technology labs to troubleshoot basic problems on library equipment to provide first tier staff support of library business systems to prepare and/or assist with library programs and outreach events, and provide satellite services. Library associates will work in collaboration with internal service teams and external partners offer resource or program referral information prepare and present teen programs under the direction of a teen librarian. To make collection development recommendations to a librarian for an assigned area and to perform other duties as assigned.
(This is the entry level position for the Library Associate series. It differs from the 2 level in that the employees are developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function at the full performance level.)

The positions in this series are at a paraprofessional level. Work is performed under the direction of a librarian or department head.

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).


Salary Range for Library Associate 1 – $21.37 to $31.27
Salary Range for Library Associate 2 – $23.76 to $35.07

Examples of Work Performed

  • Promote a diverse and culturally competent respectful workplace.
  • Assist patrons in locating materials and information in response to their reference questions by using the library catalog, online databases, and other reference sources.
  • Assist patrons at the service desk by collecting library fees, answering account-related questions, and assisting with library card applications.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of print and electronic resources and troubleshoot basic equipment problems.
  • Serve as a resource person by responding to staff questions on library-specific applications and lab and makerspace technology.
  • Update and manage technology lab equipment, working with vendors, as needed.
  • Support staff and patron technology use by creating training documentation and through one-on-one and group instruction.
  • Make selection and pre-weeding recommendations to a librarian, using bibliographic resources to assist librarians in collection development.
  • Prepare and present story times under the direction of a children’s librarian.
  • Assist with library tours, book clubs, outreach and pop-up events, and digital literacy, makerspace, and other library programs.
  • Maintain pop-up schedule and equipment.
  • Serve as the Library’s volunteer coordinator, recruiting and overseeing circulation, special event, outreach, and homework help volunteers.
  • Serve as the senior staff person in the absence of the library manager or professional staff.

Minimum qualifications for the Library Associate 1 Education: Two years of college education
Experience:
None.


Substitutions:
One year of full-time library work experience can be substituted for a year of college, on a year to year basis, for up to the two years of the required education.

Certifications/Licensure: None.
Preferred:
Library work experience.

Minimum qualifications for the Library Associate 2


Education : Two years of college education.

Experience : Two years of experience as a Library Associate 1 or equivalent.

Substitution : One year of full-time library work experience can be substituted for a year of college, on a year to year basis, for up to the two years of the required education.

Certifications/Licensure : None.

Preferred : Four years of full-time library work experience.

Exam/Screening Process Information

The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:

  • Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for Library Associate 1-2 will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.

Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Library Associate 1-2. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for six months or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 45 will be forwarded to the department for further consideration.

Veterans Preference : This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process . Veterans Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veterans preference should update their veterans DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
