Summary

The Kennel Attendant position will care for pets and other non-farm animals. This position will also provide support to the Animal Care &amp Control Clinic by keeping records of feedings/treatments/care received and discharge records.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Feed &amp water animals according to schedules / feeding instructions
  • Mix food / liquid formulas / medications / food supplements according to instructions / prescriptions / knowledge of animal species
  • Examine &amp observe animals to detect signs of illness / disease / injury
  • Contact veterinarians to secure treatment to sick or injured animals
  • Clean facility laundry
  • Clean / organize / maintain / disinfect animal quarters such as pens, staples, equipment and saddles &amp bridles.
  • Perform animal grooming duties
  • Order / unload / store feed &amp supplies
  • Hold or restrain animals during veterinary procedures
  • Assist with anesthetize or perform inoculation of animals according to instructions
  • Transfer animals from one location to another
  • Exercise animals to maintain their physical &amp mental health
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills &amp Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles / processes for providing customer &amp personal services:
  • Knowledge of administrative &amp clerical procedures / systems such as:
word processing managing files &amp records other office procedures &amp terminology
  • Demonstrate approachability dealing with the public
  • Ability to comfortably handle animals with behavioral issues which may include shyness &amp fearfulness
  • Ability to problem solve effectively &amp efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly &amp concisely, written / verbal communication
  • Ability to routinely lift 40 to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor
  • Ability to work independently &amp as member of team
  • Ability to work on weekends / holidays / varying shift times
  • Ability to work indoors &amp outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work with physically strong dogs
  • Ability to bend / stoop / hike / walk / kneel / lift

ADA and Other Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Physical Requirements:
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods
  • Occasional movement throughout the workday daily to interact with staff and accomplish tasks
  • Communicating both verbally and written in order to exchange information
  • Repeating motions of holding, grasping, turning, that may include the wrist, hands, and/or fingers
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Work primarily in office environment
  • Ability to operate office equipment, such as computer, copier, fax machine, and phone

Sensory Requirements:
  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, tabulating data.
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
  • Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

Working Conditions: Disagreeable working conditions. Continuously exposed to several elements such as noise, intermittent standing, walking: and occasional pushing, carrying, or lifting.
Other Requirements: Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment hearing, vision, and psychological evaluation. Failure to successfully pass all segments of the pre-employment evaluation process will result in disqualification from further consideration under this vacancy announcement.

Preferred Qualification

•Experience working in environments such as boarding and animal control facilities or veterinary clinics

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s license

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
