The Position

Janitors perform a variety of routine cleaning work on EBMUD buildings and grounds.

Typical duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting and spot cleaning floors, carpets, rugs and draperies cleaning and disinfecting restrooms, shower rooms and plumbing fixtures washing and cleaning doors, windows, walls and upholstery operating motorized and power tools and equipment.

The ideal candidate for the position will possess the following characteristics:

  • Work independently within established guidelines on an assigned shift.
  • Learn how to safely operate a variety of equipment and machinery typically used for large cleaning tasks.
  • Safely and effectively complete assigned job duties in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other EBMUD staff and the public.

The salary range is $5,900 per month increasing to $6,195, $6,505, and $6,830 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1. Completion of the eighth grade, or its equivalent, and no experience.

2. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class, including sufficient strength to maneuver cleaning, vacuuming, and stripping equipment weighing up to 50 pounds strength to lift heavy and bulky waste receptacles and sufficient agility to work on slippery surfaces.

3. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

4. Must be willing to work swing shift and overtime as needed.

5. Some positions require possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

The Selection Process

1. Submit a completed EBMUD application online between 8:00 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2024, and 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2024. Only the first 300 application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted. Application materials submitted at any other time or on other dates will not be accepted. Application materials faxed, mailed, or delivered to EBMUD will not be accepted.

2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3. The study guide required for the test is now available, online only, through 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2024. Candidates may use the link in this job announcement, or the link in their Government Jobs account, to access the study guide. Candidates are responsible for printing the study guide during the time period it is available.

4. Qualified applicants will be invited to a multiple-choice written test. The written test is tentatively scheduled for late May/early June 2024. The written test will measure the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

5. Those candidates passing the written test will be invited to the panel interview tentatively scheduled for late June 2024.

6. Candidates who are successful on all parts of the selection process will be placed on the hiring list in rank order for further consideration. As part of the hiring interview process, EBMUD will obtain and review driving records.

7. The probation period for this position is 6 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

8. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
