Job Description
The Complex Systems Simulation and Optimization Group in the NREL Computational Science Center has an opening for a full-time advanced computing professional with competencies in scalable advanced computing and cloud frameworks, who will enable the effective utilization and creation of scalable accelerated applications, software, and/or workflows in support of clean energy research with on-premise hardware and in the cloud.
The successful candidate will collaborate with NREL staff and researchers on efforts to effectively carry out research and development from the atomic to the national scale utilizing NREL’s advanced computing capabilities in a hybrid cloud setting. They will be part of small teams, guiding technical leadership in identifying, designing, implementing, deploying, and supporting solutions for research and development on advanced, scalable, accelerated computing hardware, which may require consideration of parallel application and workflow deployment and support, cloud architectures, computer hardware and library performance, and/or advanced programming requirements.
Job duties and responsibilities of the position include:
- Operations and research support: identify, configure, debug, deploy, and support frameworks and workflows on scalable, accelerated advanced computing hardware and cloud architectures centered on simulations, optimization, and machine learning.
- Collaboration with researchers: Collaborate with scientists, engineers and analysts on enabling utilization of advanced, scalable computing systems for NREL mission goals.
- Containerized workflows: design, develop, implement, and support containerized workflows in a hybrid cloud setting.
- Design, develop, implement, and support web technology deployment that rely on scalable compute and data intensive workflows.
- Workflow architecture: architect scientific, engineering and analysis workflows for hybrid-cloud setting including advanced scalable frameworks and systems.
- Integrate scientific and engineering workflows, intuitive user interfaces, data systems, visualizations techniques and secure web services with scalable data formats, high performance computing simulations, big data analytics applications and petabyte-scale storage systems to provide software solutions for the management and analysis of complex sets of data.
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
- An interest in renewable energy, energy efficiency and supporting technologies wind, solar, vehicles, biomass, hydrogen, buildings, batteries, and electric grid technologies.
- Background and experience in managing software dependencies in HPC and Cloud environments with commons tools such as Modules, Conda, Spack, and containerization.
- Background and experience in developing workflows, including job scheduler integration, data management of big datasets, data movement, and data availability/sharing with remote users and systems.
- Experience in python software libraries and frameworks.
- Experience programming in Python and Unix Shell.
- Experience with hybrid cloud computing including Amazon Web Services and dynamically scaling execution of compute intensive workloads in the cloud.
- Experience in containerization and scaling including Docker and Apptainer.
- Experience with database architecture and administration including PostgresSQL and MongoDB.
- Experience with utilizing NodeJS, JavaScript and other Web technologies.
- Software engineering experience in coding and testing patterns, version control and CI/CD, engineering software platforms and large-scale simulation, learning and data workflows especially using open-source tools.
