General Summary

An Evidence Technician performs specialized support functions related to receiving, processing, preserving, storing, releasing, and disposal of legal evidence and other property submitted to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Property &amp Evidence Unit. Personnel assigned to this function complete chain of custody entries for all evidence processed and received and testify in court as required. All personnel are required to complete quarterly audits to ensure agency accreditation is maintained. Work is performed under normal supervision. The position is located in the Ada County Sheriffs Office, Administrative Services Bureau, Property &amp Evidence Unit.
New Evidence Technicians will start out at a Level I pay rate of $21.50/hr. Once the essential skills have been learned, they may advance to a Level II pay rate of $23.00/hr. and then up to a Level III pay rate of $24.50/hr.

Essential Functions

  • Operates general office equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, scanners, and general warehouse equipment
  • Operates the evidence management, court, and jail systems applications
  • Operates a digital telephone system in order to receive, transfer, and place calls
  • Maintains chain of custody and integrity of all evidentiary items
  • Maintains digital and physical files on all evidentiary items entered
  • Maintains confidentiality for all cases and subjects
  • Performs intake inspection and processing of evidentiary items
  • Processes required notification for all lost and found and safekeeping items
  • Processes items for auction or disposal as approved
  • Understands and processes invoices, crime lab processing requests, and supplemental materials
  • Responds to email requests and inquiries from prosecutors, law enforcement personnel, and the public
  • Responds to written correspondence from the public, as well as from incarcerated individuals
  • Releases evidentiary items to prosecutors, law enforcement personnel, and the public
  • Assists the public with inquiries by scheduling releases and/or coordinating the disposition of items
  • Assists law enforcement personnel with the ISP Prelog submission system and
  • Assists and advises law enforcement personnel on proper packaging and handling of evidentiary items.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must attend IAPE evidence management classes and work towards certification process
  • Knowledge of legal procedures, documents, and terminology preferred
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service and support to our law enforcement partners
  • Ability to perform duties professionally while observing emotionally stressful situations and outcomes
  • Ability to type at least 40 wpm
  • Ability to effectively demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Other Requirements
  • Must have and maintain a valid Idaho driver’s license and pass a Driving Record Check
  • These positions have been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment &amp Physical Demands

  • May be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Some areas may require the ability to lift greater weights and/or use a variety of safety ladders, handcarts, and dollies
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Some tasks may require sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, bending, kneeling, and twisting to move large or heavy objects
  • May be required to work any day of the week and any shift including weekends and holidays
  • Work is performed in both a standard office and outdoor environment, with potential exposure to adverse weather conditions
  • Work duties and tasks for some Evidence Tech positions may be performed within the jail environment and in close contact with inmates or criminal offenders
  • Work environment may require exposure to hazardous materials including, but not limited to, narcotics, weapons, bodily fluids, and other crime-related evidence.
