As a Document Services Clerk-Messenger you will be an essential employee for the City of Salem, ensuring the continuous flow of information, mail, packages, records, and supply materials throughout the City. What you will do:
The Document Services Clerk-Messenger is part of a team that helps the City business moving smoothly as we work to serve the community. You will be the primary resource sorting and delivering mail, processing outgoing packages for shipping, delivering incoming packages, and transporting mail and supplies amongst all City of Salem work locations.

This position will run the City’s mailing equipment to include Pitney Bowes mail inserter, meter machine, and high-speed envelope printer. You will image documents of all sizes using a Fujitsu 7700 high speed document scanner to digitize paper records, and an Epson wide format document scanner. In addition, you will operate a Laserfiche document scanner, a ScanPro3000 to digitize microfilm, microfiche, and aperture cards. Additional information on job responsibilities:


  • Communications:
    Provide customer service to departments or the public, including answering telephone calls.
  • Conduct/Perform: Drive a city van to pick up the City’s incoming mail from the Post Office, sort and deliver the mail. Prepare the City’s outgoing mail, addressing, inserting, sealing, metering the mail, and delivery it to the Post Office. Perform numerous stops daily and remain on schedule.
  • Physical Requirements: Activity involving exertion, including lift up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects with or without accommodation. Work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures.
  • Operate: Run ACCUZIP mailing software to prepare mailing lists and produce large volume mailings. Printing 150,000+ envelopes a month.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salems driving standards.
  • High school graduate or GED, supplemented by courses in commercial subjects, and one (1) year of clerical experience, preferably in a mail room and courier services operations and/or some experience in a print shop environment, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
