Job Duties

DMV is looking to fill a Data or Statistical Scientist/Analyst position, within our Transportation Safety Services unit!

The selected candidate will conduct data extraction, data mining and merging, compilation and analysis work on special projects and surveys, create and/or provide presentations and respond to a variety of requests for highway safety data/information from internal and external entities. This position serves as backup to the Data Manager and is responsible for preparing and providing highway safety information, statistics and analysis for publication in a variety of documents and DMV web site in support of the planning, analysis and evaluation of highway safety programs and decision-making.

Duties Include:

  • Maintains list of fatality crash records to track and ensure the fatality numbers match between DMV and the other state agencies weekly or as needed.
  • Performs quality control on the assigned crash fields and provides findings in detailed reports.
  • Supports and works with the VAHSO manager and staff as a team member on the TREDS close-out process.
  • Provides managers and other department staff with appropriate crash data support by established deadlines.
  • Prepares and updates the highway safety section of the DMV/VAHSO public website within the assigned time schedule.
  • Provides, updates reports/presentations for management, executive staff and others on weekly/monthly basis or as needed.
  • Provides the updated crash and highway safety related data in the Triennial Highway Safety Plan, Annual Reports and Virginia Traffic Crash Facts.
  • Obtains and provides the Heat Maps reports to the VAHSO program managers within the assigned time schedule.
  • Obtains external/internal highway safety-related data and assists the manager in verifying the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of data in the Virginia Traffic Crash Facts.
  • Responds to requests for crash and highway safety-related data and information from internal and external requesters such as managers, executives, DMV staff, law enforcement, highway safety stakeholders, media, legislators, professionals, and others.
  • Assists and supports users in using the reporting and mapping tools to create their own reports or maps on the DMV public website or in TREDS.
  • Accesses appropriate TREDS data warehouse in order to obtain more complex, detailed crash, person and vehicle data by using report builder reporting system for analysis, reporting and data requests.
  • Performs local, state and regional highway safety analysis utilizing various, existing datasets as requested.
  • Utilizes highway safety data and information to prepare statewide and regional analysis reports by performance, demographics, location, trends, outcome and other relevant variables within established timelines.
  • Conducts analysis and special projects used to guide decisions on funding, behavioral, educational and awareness, and operational programs and special projects and compare trends.
  • Assists VAHSO staff and others as directed, in utilizing data and analytical skills to support VAHSO mission.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated and working knowledge of the latest statistical software applications, data mining and collection techniques, data science, data modeling, statistical methods and procedures, and graphic arrangements.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, collect, and organize statistical data to analyze, obtain meaningful insights, and make preliminary interpretations of statistical data to effectively present factual information and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Manage multiple projects, respond to emerging priorities, and meet deadlines.
