Qualifications

Education and experience: High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Complete a federal background check in accordance with the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) for issuance of an HSPD-12 compliant Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.

Summary

This classification learns to perform para-professional claims work of average difficulty. An employee in this class learns to provide direct assistance to the disability claims examiner in the adjudication process for determining eligibility for the Social Security Administration disability program. This classification performs responsibilities at the learning level under direct supervision. This class differs from the DHS Disability Claims Assistant 2 in that an incumbent of the latter functions at the working level.

  • An applicant appointed to this classification will be reclassified to a(n) DHS Disability Claims Assistant 2 after successful completion of a mandatory one-year training period ‘unacceptable’ or ‘needs improvement’ performance ratings during the training period will result in automatic demotion or termination.

Responsibilities

  • Receives a significant volume of documentation, primarily by mail, such as claimant correspondence and medical records from vendors, providers, and outside agencies for use by the claims examiner in the processing of Social Security Disability claims.
  • Learns to assist claims examiners with obtaining documentation from providers or claimants. Learns to gather and apply relevant information to ensure clients receive effective services. Learns to review claimant forms for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Learns to maintain integrity and security of personal identifiable information, federal computer systems, and confidential documents.
  • Learns to interact by phone with claimants, third parties, attorneys, and outside entities for the purpose of furnishing and obtaining information regarding client circumstances.
  • Learns to utilize scripted instructions as directed by federal and state policies to provide information and direction to claimants. Learns to communicate questions through appropriate chain of command to obtain policy or procedural clarification.
  • Learns to organize and enter claimant documentary evidence and records into an electronic case management folder.
  • Learns to document case notes, appointments, and general correspondence for examiner review and adjudication.
  • Learns to schedule consultative examination appointments for claimants and provide notification of appointment time and date to claimants, third parties, and attorneys. Learns to reschedule missed consultative examination appointments and document reasons for missed exams.
