Job Description: POSITION: Custodian DEPARTMENT: Buildings and Grounds WORK SCHEDULE: Nights 3:30 p.m. – Midnight M-F STATUS: Full-time FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt HOURLY RATE: $21.6923

Incumbent serves as Custodian for the Buildings and Grounds Department, responsible for maintaining cleanliness of assigned County facilities.

DUTIES:

Sweeps/cleans exterior entrances daily before buildings open to the public. Picks up cigarette butts and replaces sand in ashtrays.

Cleans assigned County facilities daily, including, but not limited to, emptying and cleaning trash receptacles, replacing liners as needed, and placing trash in dumpster vacuuming all carpets cleaning desktops mopping corridor floors, sweeping/mopping hallways and office entrances, and dry mopping courtrooms and judges chambers cleaning/sanitizing water fountains dusting/polishing brass surfaces, iron spindles dusting office cubicles, furniture, window sills, picture frames, ledges, door frames, and benches washing interior and exterior of corridor door and window glass wet mopping areas and dusting, mopping, sweeping stairwells. Wet mops service elevator entrance, receiving room, and second and third floors weekly, and corridor and lobby floors as needed.

Cleans and sanitizes restrooms daily, including, but not limited to, sanitizing fixtures and floors, checking, refilling and cleaning paper product and soap dispensers, wiping counter and mirrors, cleaning air vents, and emptying/cleaning trash cans. Periodically uses drain cleaner to prevent or free clogged drains, and ensures drains are filled with water.

Notifies supervisor of light bulb replacement needs.

Performs weekly tasks as assigned, such as cleaning/vacuuming public seating areas and checking seats for stains and damage operating floor scrubber on corridor floors.

Shampoos and spot cleans carpets, and strips and waxes floors as needed.

Maintains exterior of building, including sweeping steps and sidewalks, removing trash/litter from trash receptacles. Responds to general inquiries from the public, such as directions to various departments.

Cleans spills/messes caused by County personnel and the public as needed.

Periodically operates floor scrubber on sub-basement corridor floors as assigned. Strips and seals vinyl floors annually. Treats woodwork in corridor quarterly and in courtroom annually.

Specific shift duties are per the department Procedures Manual.

Ability to work emergency situations as needed.

Any other duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or GED.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of basic cleaning, sanitation, and safety policies and procedures, and universal health precautions, and ability to ensure safety of self and others.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, work orders, material safety data sheets, and product application directions, such as cleaning solutions.

Ability to properly operate all assigned tools and equipment, such as mops, brooms, shovel, vacuum, floor scrubber and buffer, and snow blower.

Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including sitting and walking at will, exerting sustained physical effort, walking/standing for long periods, bending, reaching, crouching/ kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, and pushing/pulling/ lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 75 pounds.

Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, other County personnel, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.

Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to appropriately respond to constructive criticism.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.

Ability to occasionally work weekend hours.

As a result of the duties associated with this job, there is the potential of becoming exposed to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious diseases. To safeguard employees and eliminate the liability placed on Hamilton County, employees working in this position shall begin the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination and subsequent training within 10 days of their initial job assignment per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(2)(i). The initial and two subsequent vaccinations shall be administered by the Hamilton County Health Department and free of charge to the employee. If the employee has previously received the three shot Hepatitis B vaccination, official documentation must be provided to the supervisor identifying the dates in which each shot was appropriately administered. A Temporary Medical Declination may be made for a period of up to six months. A Declination form must be completed, outlining the medical reasons for the temporary declination and forwarded to the Safety &amp Risk Manager. Employees temporarily declining the vaccine are prohibited from performing any duties in which they may be exposed to a blood borne pathogen or other potentially infectious disease until they are able to begin/continue the series of vaccinations. Failure to comply will result in termination of employment.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs simple, repetitive tasks following clear, complete instructions, including safety policies and universal health precautions. Some care and skill are required to prevent damage to tools and equipment and prevent injury to self and others.

III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent communicates with co-workers, other County personnel, and the public for the purpose of exchanging information. Incumbent reports directly to Assistant Superintendent.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbents duties involve sitting and walking at will, exerting sustained physical effort, walking/standing for long periods, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, far vision, and pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 75 pounds. Intense physical strain is not associated with normal operations.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs duties in the Judicial Center and Courthouse involving occasionally working on a ladder, and exposure to potentially hostile/violent prisoners, potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals, and blood borne pathogens, for which safety/health precautions must be followed at all times to avoid infection and injury to self and others. Incumbent occasionally works weekend hours.
