COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN I

The pay range for this position is $24.90 – $33.47 per hour

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of Emergency Services and Communications has a full-time vacancy for Communications Technician I, SOC Title 49-2020 TELECOMMS REPAIRERS-5. This position has a 40 hour work week and is considered non-exempt.

SUMMARY: Prepares, installs, and maintains communications equipment and the statewide communications network to include Land Mobile Radio (LMR) apparatus, digital microwave, telephony, video, IP networks, and related systems.

18 Months or 1.5 Years of additional relevant experience = Associates degree

36 Months or 3 Years of additional relevant experience = Bachelors degree

54 Months or 4.5 Years of additional relevant experience = Masters degree

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate’s degree from a recognized college or technical institute with a major study in radio engineering or a related field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Four years’ experience in the support and maintenance of wireless communications, infrastructure equipment, and software. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license. Memberships in professional communication organizations such as the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) are desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be willing to respond to emergency call out, if available, 24 hours per day, and seven days per week.

2. Must be willing and able to climb structures up to twenty (20) feet in height, as needed to service equipment.

3. Must be willing to travel to remote mountaintop sites up to five (5) miles round trip by foot or a state-issued four-wheel vehicle.

4. Requires performing regular job functions with exposure to and environmental elements including adverse/severe weather conditions.

5. Requires performing medium to heavy work including physical exertion, and will frequently need to bend, lift, walk, and climb.

6. Must be able to skillfully replace and build equipment racks, antenna mounts, and cabling devices.

7. Selected candidate will undergo a fingerprint based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check in order to ensure suitability for exposure to confidential information.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares, installs and performs maintenance of LMR and microwave equipment to include transmitters, receivers, portable radios, mobile radios, coaxial cables, waveguides, and associated hardware in both fixed and mobile locations in support of Public Safety officials statewide.

Prepares, installs, and performs maintenance of telephony, video, and IP network equipment in various locations statewide for Department of Safety (DOS) to ensure emergency communications and provide situational awareness during emergencies or during large events.

Maintains and configures dispatch consoles, audio recorders, and core LMR communications system for use by DOS personnel to provide dispatch, E911, and emergency support functions for public safety entities.

Performs maintenance to and, when necessary, installation of a variety of vehicle warning equipment to include lights, sirens, and associated vehicle mounted devices to ensure proper functionality of equipment in DOS fleet vehicles.

Utilizes computers and software to program, maintain, troubleshoot and resolve problems with equipment maintains logs and files reports relating to system issues and repairs made.

Maintains and evaluates DC battery systems, Uninterruptable Power Supply systems, and associated hardware to ensure continued operations of equipment used to support the public safety mission.

Tabulates daily work performed and submits to supervisory staff for record keeping purposes.

Supervises contractors to ensure functional requirements specified in the contract are met.

Provides end user training and technical support of various equipment for DOS personnel to assure proper operation of communications equipment, software and network.

Travels to remote mountaintop sites by foot, OHRV, snowmobile, or four wheel drive vehicle to maintain tower buildings and grounds. Maintenance may include minor weather-related repair to the buildings and removing vegetation.
