Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Plumbers &amp Steamfitters, Local 367, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

DEPARTMENT : Anchorage Water &amp Wastewater Utility
HOURS OF WORK : 4-10s, Monday -Thursday / Tuesday – Friday, 6:00am – 4:30pm
LOCATION : 325 E 94th Court
Participates in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, seven (7) days a week, 24 hours per day.

Example of Duties

Operates the water distribution and/or the wastewater collection systems, and performs both the preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on those systems as assigned, supervised, and reviewed, based on the required skill and the level of supervision needed, and according to the applicable State of Alaska Operator Certification level of the individual. Employees are assigned general duties in the broad area of the water distributions and/or wastewater collection systems to work independently, with less direct supervision, and more responsibility as proficiency levels, appropriate licensing, and experience increases. Employees work varying shifts, including early mornings, days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, on emergency and non-emergency assignments, to meet the water distribution and/or wastewater collection needs of the Municipality of Anchorage, in the domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors. Water Distribution &amp Wastewater Collection Operators III &amp IV are lead positions, and assist in the training of other operators and may be assigned as Crew Leads with the duties that include assigning, controlling, and checking work for accuracy and conformity with procedures and regulations, as well as acting in some supervisory roles as assigned. Perform other required duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Collection &amp Distribution Operator In Training – Level 1

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Valid State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License, Class B (CDL-B) or higher, with tanker endorsement.

Collection &amp Distribution Operator I – Level 2

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Valid State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License, Class B (CDL-B) or higher, with tanker endorsement.

State of Alaska Water Distribution 1 Operator and Wastewater Collection 1 Operator Certifications.

Collection &amp Distribution Operator II – Level 3

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Valid State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL-A) or higher, with tanker endorsement.

State of Alaska Water Distribution 2 Operator and Wastewater Collection 2 Operator Certifications.

Collection &amp Distribution Operator III – Level 4

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Valid State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL-A) or higher, with tanker endorsement.

State of Alaska Water Distribution 3 Operator and Wastewater Collection 3 Operator Certifications.

Collection &amp Distribution Operator IV – Level 5

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in the operations, maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and/or repair of water distribution or wastewater collection systems.

Valid State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL-A) or higher, with tanker endorsement.

State of Alaska Water Distribution 4 Operator and Wastewater Collection 4 Operator Certifications.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicants Alaska Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B, with tanker endorsement, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Drivers License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol &amp Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference


Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
