Job Summary The College of Agriculture at Auburn University is excited to recruit candidates for an Aquaculture Technician ! The Aquaculture Tech will assist the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory (AUSL) Manager with the field rearing of shellfish for research and breeding lines, maintenance of two shellfish research farms and facility maintenance of culture equipment, infrastructure, and vehicles and vessels. The position will work under the guidance of the lead technician responsible for AUSL shellfish farms. This position is located in Dauphin Island, Alabama.

This is a 1-Year limited term appointment funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

Essential Functions Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist with operation of two AUSL open water research shellfish farm sites including shellfish culture, maintenance of shellfish, gear maintenance and repair, and farm site infrastructure maintenance. In support of these functions, the candidate must be able to drive vehicles, trailer boats, and operate boats.
  • Assist with unit’s facilities and equipment upkeep and maintenance.
  • Assist in maintenance of vehicles and vessels used for field work.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
Level I: High school diploma or equivalent no experience required.
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of relevant experience.
Level III : High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of relevant experience.
Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of relevant experience.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Certification or Licensure Requirements:
A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment is required.
Must be able to obtain vessel operators designation on driver’s license.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications Minimum Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to drive vehicles, trailer and operate boats.
  • Must be able to swim and be comfortable working in bay and open ocean environments on boats and in the water under variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs minimum.
  • Basic ability to maintain and edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
