OUC – The Reliable One , an industry leader and the second largest municipal utility in Florida committed to serving the community and the environment, is presently seeking an Apprentice, Power Plant to join Stanton-Operations division.

We are looking for a career minded Power Plant Apprentice with strong communication skills to study and learn Power Plant Operations. Light preventative maintenance as required.

In this role, you will be responsible for making hourly rounds on turbine, boilers, pumps, fans, heat exchangers, valves etc. and making necessary adjustments.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Six (6) months in industrial or technical related work experience (required)
  • Drivers License must meet OUC Policy Standard
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of general industrial and power plant safety practices
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate using plant paging system and radios
  • Technical assessment will be administered for position

Salary Range: Starting at $26.939 per hour (Estimated $56,003.00 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $29.204 per hour (Estimated $60,744.00 annually)

Job Purpose:

Make rounds to monitor plant equipment on an hourly basis, make adjustments to equipment as needed or instructed, and report findings to Control Center I Operator, Watch Engineer, and Plant Management.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Study and learn Power Plant Operations and to accurately follow instruction
  • Make hourly rounds of turbine, boiler, pumps, fans, heat exchanger, valves, etc. Must make adjustments as necessary and report findings to Control Center Operator I, and assist the Control Center Operator I in the operation of all unit controls
  • Make hourly rounds of Additive Prep, Electrostatic Precipitator, and Flue Gas Scrubber. Work with other operations personnel in troubleshooting any problems that may occur during a given shift
  • Responsible for making hourly rounds of the Cooling Tower Blowdown Treatment Plant during a given shift. Work with other operations personnel in troubleshooting any problems that may occur during a given shift
  • Responsible for making hourly rounds of Coal Handling, coal train unloading, and Scrubber Limestone Supply Systems. Work with other operations personnel in troubleshooting any problems that may occur during a given shift
  • Performance of light preventive maintenance when required
  • Perform equipment checks and monitor operations within established parameters at the Stanton Energy Center including the Main Power Plant, Flue Gas Scrubber, Brine Plant, and Material Handling
  • Assist in troubleshooting operational problems
  • Perform safe and efficient operation of equipment listed above
  • Employee must exercise initiative, judgment, and knowledge relating to mechanical work performance
  • Complete computer-based training modules on Power Plant Systems
  • Assist in all areas of plant for operational needs
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:


  • Demonstrated ability to perform above mentioned duties
  • Working knowledge of general industrial and Power Plant Safety Practices
  • Ability to communicate in an understandable voice with all levels of plant personnel both verbally, on in-plant radios, and page system.

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Six (6) months is industrial or technical related work experience (required)
  • Working knowledge of general industrial and power plant safety practices
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills. Able to communicate on plant paging system and radios.
  • Driver’s License must meet OUC Policy standard
  • Technical assessment will be given for position.

Working Conditions:

This job requires willingness to work extended hours when required including nights, weekends, and holidays. This job is very frequently exposed to noxious fumes, chemicals, heights/confined areas, and excessive noise. This job is frequently exposed to insects. This job is occasionally exposed to extreme weather This job requires working in areas with elevations in excess of 100 feet, vibration, and extreme heat (non-weather). This job involves risk of electrical shock.

  • Extreme Weather- Must work outside regardless of weather if dictated by operating conditions.
  • Noxious Fumes- Some operations produce fumes. Safety equipment provided as needed.
  • Chemicals- Routine exposure to chemicals. Safety equipment provided as needed.

Physical Requirements:

This job involves very frequently standing walking climbing (ladders, stairs, hills) and detailed inspection/reading/editing. This job involves constant speaking and hearing, and operation of Power Plant Aux. Equipment RE: Brine Plant, Scrubber, Material Handling, and Precipitator Control Boards. This job involves frequently sitting bending/stooping pushing, pulling, and/or digging and reaching over head. This job involves occasionally lifting 0-20 lbs. and 21-40 lbs. This job involves occasional writing and typing/CRT (attention to detail). This job rarely involves lifting 50+ lbs. This job rarely involves kneeling or crawling. This job involves the ability to negotiate inclines and stairs ability to open and close valves requiring 50 pounds of force and ability to wear a respirator when required.

Specific physical requirements as an Emergency Response Team member are as follows:


  • Must be physically capable of lifting 40 pounds.
  • Must be physically capable of wearing firefighter’s turnout gear.
  • Must be physically capable of wearing and using a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) weighing approximately 30 pounds.
  • Must be physically capable of wearing a negative pressure respirator
  • Must be physically capable of pulling a fire hose, using firefighting tools such as pikes, forcible entry tools, hose clamps, etc., must be physically capable of climbing numerous flights of stairs while using the tools and wearing the firefighter’s personal protective equipment mentioned above (SCBA and turnout gear).
  • Due to the nature of emergency operations the employee will be required to remain clean shaven at all times while at work to allow immediate use of SCBA or other respiratory equipment.
