HIRING RANGE: $53,925 – $67,406 /year (106 grade level)
SALARY RANGE: $53,925 – $84,258 /year
LOCATION: Dakota County Extension and Conservation Center, Farmington, MN

The Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is seeking candidates for an Administrative Specialist position. The primary objective of this position is to provide administrative services, outreach and program support for the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). The position will be responsible for assisting with day-to-day operations of the SWCD including customer service, organizing and distributing mail and meeting materials, assisting with the development of work plans and reports, supporting communication and outreach aspects of conservation programming including social media, and managing web site content.

The Administrative Specialist will report to the District Manager but will work in a team environment with staff from the SWCD, Dakota County, watershed management organizations and a variety of local, state, and federal organizations. The position will serve as the primary point of contact for customer inquiries. Strong customer service, communication and organizational skills are necessary components of this position.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Administrative Support or closely related field AND two years of progressively responsible office, administrative, and/or general customer service experience OR
  • One year of specialized office administrative training beyond high school AND three years of progressively responsible office, administrative, and/or general customer service experience OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience (as noted above) to equal or exceed 4 years.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a communication environment – public relations, outreach, media
  • Experience with science, nature, and environmental content
  • Experience with graphic design including developing and managing web sites.
  • Experience with GIS

Duties &amp Responsibilities

  • Provides general administrative functions and serves as the initial point of contact for customers.
  • Supports staff with preparing, organizing, and distributing documents and agendas.
  • Purchases office supplies and maintains program inventories.
  • Coordinates the purchase and maintains databases under the SWCDs tree sale program.
  • Develops and maintains the SWCD website and partner websites.
  • Assists with design and drafting of quarterly newsletter, press releases and outreach materials.
  • Promotes the SWCD through social media platforms.
  • Assists staff with coordinating events and workshops including the registrations and scheduling.
  • Provides support related to SWCDs role as building authority, including scheduling of conference rooms and coordinating with Dakota County Facility Management and other building tenants.
  • Assists with file management and maintaining records.
  • Assists with developing maps and graphics for project planning.
  • Provides information to landowners on conservation programs or directs them to appropriate staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to use tact and discretion to preserve confidentiality of sensitive materials and information/
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with the public, internal staff, partnering organizations, elected officials and outside organizations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a County office building. Work is primarily sedentary, although there is some walking, travel, and carrying of lightweight items such as notebooks and work papers. May require occasional travel. Work is often performed independently without supervision. Occasional evening and weekend work is expected.
