Background Check
The Inspection Service criminal background check is conducted using United States information resources only (e.g., FBI
fingerprint check, state and county checks). A criminal background check involves a 5-year inquiry for any location where
the individual has resided, worked or gone to school within the United States or its territories. As a result of this limitation,
the criminal background checks of individuals who have not resided in the United States or its territories for the preceding
5-years may not be considered complete. The Inspection Service may be able to process inquiries for U.S. Citizens only,
but only if their time spent out of the country was spent as: a trailing spouse or dependent of someone working for the U.S.
government (military or civilian), a missionary, a student attending school in a foreign country, a Peace Corps participant, or
as an employee of a U.S.-based employer/company. If the Inspection Service is unable to perform a complete background
check because of residency outside the United States, such individuals will be ineligible for Postal employment.
Functional Purpose
Provides service-wide field maintenance support for mail processing and customer services equipment systems, including
evaluating and making recommendations for improving equipment performance and reliability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides field support by phone and through on-site visits in the analysis, evaluation, and resolution of equipment system
malfunctions and performance deterioration. Leads continuous improvement and special projects teams to diagnose root
cause, develop and implement sustainable solutions to improve machine and equipment performance.
2. Participates in the evaluation and monitoring of hardware and software systems to determine equipment reliability and
maintainability provides recommendations on equipment changes and enhancements, including coordinating activities to
ensure maintenance documentation and training reflect modifications in a timely manner.
3. Maintains and updates national equipment information database systems establishes procedures and methods for
information collection, analysis, and reporting to facilitate the tracking of equipment performance indicators.
4. Extracts and analyzes performance data to identify trends, outliers and anomalies uses information to develop
recommendations to improve service, productivity, and machine performance to reduce costs and achieve operational goals.
5. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of maintenance programs and performance standards
established to provide system-wide efficiencies in equipment systems performance.
6. Participates in and assists with the development and coordination of processes and procedures necessary for supporting
and contributing to the establishment of specialized maintenance technical support equipment teams.
7. Provides information to and coordinates with field maintenance on the provisioning of repair parts for national equipment
maintenance programs.
8. Provides technical review to facilitate the disposition of recommendations for equipment modifications and changes
originating from employee suggestion programs and determines the maintenance impact of Engineering change requests,
including cost projections and scheduling of proposed changes.
9. Provides to field maintenance supervisors and employees technical advice and guidance on maintenance equipment,
communication, and electronic systems, and field training.
10. Provides technical information, feedback and improvement recommendations to other postal functions, equipment
manufacturers, and contractors on equipment system functionality and operational performance.

1. Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, technical guidance, equipment failure analysis, problem management and
trend analysis to support field maintenance customers.
2. Ability to interface and coordinate with internal and external customers to resolve equipment and system problems.
3. Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate the efforts of a national technical support network of employees in accomplishing
their field support activities.
4. Ability to conduct tests and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of existing maintenance programs and equipment
recommending changes when necessary.
5. Ability to conduct trend analysis of equipment failures and recommend action to reduce failure occurrences.
6. Ability to guide and assist remotely located technicians in troubleshooting equipment and system malfunctions using fault
isolation techniques, including on-line diagnostic tools and systems.
7. Knowledge of quality and continuous improvement tools and techniques (e.g. Seven Basic Tools, Lean Six Sigma, etc.).
8. SPECIAL CONDITION: Willingness to work long hours and irregular schedules both of which may include considerable
travel.
9. Ability to employ analysis of reporting system data in order to make data driven decisions based on performance measures
(e.g. total maintenance performance, electrical safety, machine performance) to achieve desired business results.
10. Knowledge of Condition-Based and Reliability Maintenance practices.
11. Knowledge of maintenance and repair of fixed and non-fixed mechanization automation, robotics customer service
equipment, data collection/communications systems including hardware and software applications.
