Duties

At the full performance level, the incumbent serves as an authoritative specialist and program expert in the adjudication of Social Security disability and non-disability cases on the disability staff of the Regional Office (RO) or Program Service Centers (PSC). Handles the full range of disability determination workload in the Agency, as assigned from field offices, PSCs, Office of Central Operations (OCO) and as mutually agreed from Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) and state Disability Determination Services (DDSs). Acts as the technical resource for questions from DDS, Payment Center Operations (PCO) and field on all disability related issues which include complex cases such as Expedited Reinstatement cases and Special Disability Workload (SDW) cases, in addition to making determinations and processing various aspects of these complex cases.

Qualifications

GS-12: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, or equivalent, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience is experience performing work that involves reviewing, developing, examining, investigating, adjudicating and the authorizing of complex claims for medical disability programs and conducting quality reviews of medical claim decisions, provides medical disability training or managing/supervising a medical disability unit; knowledge of claims analysis and adjudication of medical disabilities, medical terms and findings, causes of diseases, treatment methods and probable results, and relation of physical impairments to ability; developing and evaluating pertinent medical facts and evidence to apply and interpret state and federal laws, regulations, policies, precedents and other criteria for physical and mental impairment disability cases.

Experience in adjudicating adult and child initial and/or reconsideration claims from a state or federal disability determination service (e.g., DDS, DPU, DPB, or OQR) is preferred.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS:

In addition to the specialized experience requirement listed above, applicants must have experience in making final medical determinations of disability at the initial, reconsideration, and/or continuing disability review level. You must show this experience in your resume.

COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT INTERVIEW PROCESS ( CAIP ) INTERVIEW – Applicants will be required to participate in a panel interview (after basic eligibility determination) to demonstrate an aptitude for meeting and dealing with the public. Applicants must pass this interview process in order to be found fully qualified for this position and receive further consideration for selection. This interview will cover typical situations, which might be encountered on the job, in person or over the telephone. Applicants must demonstrate qualities such as clarity of speech, ability to listen, ability to establish confidence and put others at ease and the ability to organize and express thoughts clearly. If you do not pass the CAIP interview, you will not qualify for the job.

This position is not currently virtual or eligible for out-stationing. Selectee(s) will be required to report to the Seattle duty location. The position may be eligible for telework in accordance with agency and office policy.
