Who we are:
The primary purpose of the Consumer Affairs Division is to carry out the Attorney General’s duty to enforce the State’s laws prohibiting unfair or deceptive commercial practices, unfair methods of competition, and combinations and conspiracies in restraint of trade. This Division responds to questions from the general public and state officials relating to consumer matters. The Division mediates many of the complaints received and investigates and litigates violations of law.

What you would do:
  • This position provides information and assistance to the public and other government agencies regarding requests for information and general inquiries regarding public records.
  • Retrieving records, examining records, redacting records and compliance of requests.
  • Establishing and maintaining access to record files and storage.
  • Data entry into the Consumer Complaint database maintained by the Division.
  • Opens, logs, sorts, and delivers Division mail.
  • Additionally, this position provides administrative support to Division specialists/attorneys as needed and serves as back-up for Division telephone receptionists.
A portion of this work requires accessing and moving paper records within the building, with the ability to lift, carry up to 50 pounds of boxed records.

A HYBRID WORK SCHEDU LE will be considered after an introductory period of time, subject to the needs of the agency.

Substantive knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and or proofread correspondence, reports and materials.
Considerable ability to record, compile, summarize and analyze record files and data.
Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving and dealing with the public.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $40,000 to $45,000. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of redactions of public records in accordance with public record
guidelines.
  • Ability to enter data rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and review public records fulfillment request work flow
and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and review administrative and/or office work flow and
procedures enter routine and repetive work within structured time schedules.
  • Readiness to develop PDF redacting/editing/organization skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
