Property Security Officer Job in University of North Carolina System
The North Carolina Arboretum (TNCA) prides itself on connecting people with plants, people and places. We are currently seeking a full-time Property Security Officer whose main duty will be to provide assistance to visitors, volunteers and employees in the gatehouse while securing the property. Acting as a non-sworn officer that assists in protecting state property and controls vehicular access to the Arboretum grounds, this role also serves as the initial point of contact for visitors and customer services skills are vital.
This position has a unique schedule that will work a maximum of 3.5 days per week but will include a full 40 hours. This is not a variable schedule. This role will work 7:30 am until 8 pm, on Thurs, Fri & Sat and two Wednesdays a month from 7:30 until 4:30 p.m. The starting pay will be between $31,200 and $33,200 per year and will include full benefits offered by the State of North Carolina and the University of North Carolina System.
The primary roles of this position are to safeguard the main entrance of The North Carolina Arboretum, open and close the gates to allow entrance or exit of employees, guests and vendors and provide excellent customer service to guests by directing each visitor to various parts of the grounds or buildings.
This responsibility will be carried out by controlling vehicular access to Arboretum grounds, performing visual inspections of vehicles entering main gates, patrolling Arboretum property and the perimeter to ensure a strong public safety presence and directing traffic at special events. Further duties will include assisting sworn law enforcement officers with routine duties as needed, providing information and assistance to visitors, completing reports and preparing required documentation and cash handling.
This position acts as a non-sworn security officer that assists the department’s personnel to provide general security services. This can and may include conducting regular security checks of facilities and property throughout the shift, assistance with maintaining Arboretum, State, UNC and Federal policies and procedures relating to safety, emergency response and personnel rules. Documenting and correcting hazards is crucial as is being alert and vigilant to detect contraband and illegal activity
As the initial point of contact for visitors, customer service skills are vital as this role will be responsible for ensuring that all guests are treated with superior hospitality, friendly service and have a memorable experience at the Arboretum. This position promotes a quality guest experience by engaging with guests as a positive brand ambassador and ensuring a quality experience. The incumbent will respond to guest or employee concerns and questions, enforce company policies as they pertain to guest and employee conduct on the premises and advise Law Enforcement Officers of possible concerns or issues.
Emergency Medical Services/Safety
This role will assist in checking on the well-being of staff, volunteers and visitors as needed. Conducting safety checks of buildings, facilities and grounds will also be a task of this position with all safety hazards documented and corrected. As non-sworn security personnel, this role will assist Law Enforcement Officers as needed and will be expected to attend all required training and be up-to-date in campus safety procedures.

About the Team
Public Safety is the primary provider of law enforcement services for The North Carolina Arboretum. The fundamental responsibilities of this department involves providing assistance to visitors, volunteers and employees of The North Carolina Arboretum, protecting State property, enforcing all applicable laws and ordinances and encouraging compliance with institutional policies.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of basic protective and security practices. General working knowledge of the policies, rules and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to recognize and report situations that may violate the policies, rules and regulations. Basic knowledge of the operations of the organization and familiarity with the infrastructure of the assigned area (gatehouse). Ability to operate basic equipment such as radios, phones, flashlights, fire extinguishers, credit card processing machines, etc. Ability to use the basic functionality of security/surveillance systems for monitoring. Ability to adapt to changes in security procedures and systems adopted by the department. Communication: Ability to listen and understand messages and instructions from others. Ability to gather information as needed. Ability to transmit radio messages using established protocols and procedures. Ability to provide routine responses to general requests for information. Ability to maintain logs and records. Ability to acquire basic understanding of working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and emergency response personnel and the general public. Decision Making: Ability to recognize, identify, and report unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions. Ability to refer non-standard questions and problems to higher level. Physical Activities Remaining in a stationary position, often standing for prolonged periods.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Preferred: College degree (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree) in any field. Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service. Experience in sales, including accurate cash handling and credit card sales. Experience at a public garden, museum or cultural center is preferred
