Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Child Care Licensing Programs Assistant Deputy Director, or designee, the Office Assistant (Typing) performs general clerical support functions including: answering the telephones, assisting with supply orders, processing mail and managing the Assistant Deputy Director’s calendar. The Office Assistant also reviews correspondences for spelling and grammar and ensure it adheres to the Department’s correspondence manual.

Working Conditions

This work location is very convenient! The CDSS is located two blocks from the light rail and public transportation: within walking distance to the State Capitol, parks, restaurants, farmer’s markets and the Golden 1 Arena. Our building has easy access to I-5, Highway 50, and Highway 80.
This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under California Government Code Section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Social Services policies.

Use of a computer for several hours a day which involves sitting most of the time but may include walking or standing for brief periods. Attend meetings, workshops and training associated with job duties. Work hours and schedules may vary.

  • The position(s) require(s) the ability to type at a minimum speed as designated on the Class Specifications (link available in the additional documentation section). 1. Describe a situation where multiple assignments were due at the same time. How did you complete the assignments? Offer step by step details.
2. Describe you customer service experience and your style of communication? 3. What experience do you have working with a vulnerable population?
This position is subject to fingerprinting clearance by the Department of Justice.

Training and Development assignments may be considered based on the availability of eligible candidates and are subject to approval by the Hiring Authority prior to appointment. Training and Development assignments are temporary in nature and shall not exceed twenty-four (24) months.


Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview, but they must provide proof of residence in California prior to being eligible for appointment.
