Purpose of Position
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Why does the job exist?
The position exists to assist with the propagation and stocking of cold water fish species at Lisboa Springs Hatchery, to maintain hatchery facilities and grounds, and to administer good public relation techniques where applicable.
How does it get done?
Visual evaluation of daily production inventories to assess fish health and to determine daily task change recommendations for supervisor. Ensuring all tasks relative to production and distribution are completed. Participation in daily fish propagation activities and prioritization of daily tasks to ensure the most efficient use of available work time.
Who are the customers?
The position is for the public by providing a food supply and a recreational fishery for sport fish anglers within New Mexico.
The ideal candidate will possess an Associates Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries, Wildlife Science, Natural Sciences, Biology, Agriculture, or Animal Husbandry or have experience working at a fish hatchery. Experience in carpentry, welding or as a mechanic is preferred.
Associates degree in Agricultural Science, Aquaculture, Animal Science or Wildlife Science, or other closely related field and two (2) years in farm or ranch related experience including basic construction, electrical, and plumbing skills, heavy and farm equipment operation/maintenance, fisheries and/or wildlife habitat management. - If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of “semester hours” in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Drivers License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Requires acquisition of a Commercials Drivers License Class B.
Executive Order 2021-066 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination (including proof of a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster dose) or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated December 2, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to have received a primary series of vaccination by October 6, 2021, and a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster.

This position is primarily in an outdoor setting around 90% which consists of lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds, bending, standing, and operating machinery. The additional 10% is in an office setting completing required reports. May occasionally require overnight travel and working in inclement conditions. Pre-employment drug testing is also a requirement. The position requires the employee to reside in department provided housing. The position also requires the employee to work standby duty which will require the employee to remain on the facility continuously (24 hours) for 7 (seven) consecutive scheduled days. Incumbent will be required to have current valid Commercial B Drivers license (CDL) or have the ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months of employment.
