Location: This position is located at Umatilla Hatchery in Irrigon, Oregon.
The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply as the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,006-$3,948/mo.), as the department may consider under-filling the position.

The primary role of this position is to play a crucial role in supporting our work unit by caring for fish throughout the complete hatchery cycle, performing maintenance on grounds and equipment, and assisting in achieving assigned management goals within a fish hatchery environment. - Care for fish and perform grounds and equipment maintenance and other related duties. Pond, feed, grade, and collect eggs from wild and hatchery fish shock, pick, and enumerate eggs regulate water supplies remove mortality and recognize and treat fish diseases.
- Record and maintain information on amount and type of feed received and fed, water quality, fish mortalities, and liberations. Weigh, count, and load fish and eggs for transfer and liberation.
- Maintain, construct, and perform minor repairs to ponds and walkways, fish feeders, egg trays, and screens. Maintain and repair hatchery buildings and residences, fish pumps, lawn mowers, power tools, roads, and trails.
- Maintain equipment, grounds (lawns, flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees), operate facility equipment and answer questions from the public.
- Power wash, paint, repair, and maintain buildings, fishponds, and fish culture structures, and clean rearing ponds.
- Operate special equipment including trucks, lawn tractors, generators, fish pumps, lifts, gas and electric power tools, farm tractors with attachments. Service gas-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Meet the public, maintain public relations, answer questions, and conduct hatchery tours.
- Must work in all kinds of weather, in cold water for extended periods of time. May travel by foot or vehicle through isolated, rugged terrain.
- Required to lift objects such as cartons of chemicals, and pieces of equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Must work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance activities. Required to climb ladders and stand, bend, stoop, and work in odd positions for periods of time. Required to operate pressure washers and broom rearing ponds for long periods of time. May operate heavy equipment (forklift, tractor) on weathered roads in inclement weather.
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime. May work weekends and long hours.
- At times will need to be available on call.
- Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, and members of the public.
- An Associates degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology or Agriculture OR
- Eighteen months of experience in fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming.
- Note: You do not need to meet the Fish & Wildlife Technician minimum qualifications to be considered: the department may consider underfilling at the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level.
- Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications. Previous related experience is desirable).
- Ability to conduct work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
- Experience with fish or hatcheries
- Working with eggs and fry
- Handling adult fish
- Experience with water systems and maintenance
- Operating electronic or mechanical equipment
- Collecting and recording data
- Writing technical or summary reports
- Using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Experience with maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment maintenance and repair.
- Comfortable with interaction with the public.
