Duties

As an Education Technician, you will perform the following duties:

Instruct youth education programs that are varied, multi-sensory, age-specific, multi-disciplinary, and consistent with the missions of the National Park Service and the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. Programs range from one to three-hours on-site field trips, one- hour classroom presentations, and one-week outdoor expeditions. Most programs are designed using professional curricular templates and are linked to state and national standards. Programs address a variety of natural and cultural resources in the disciplines of natural science, cultural science, and history. Many programs are developed and implemented in close partnership with park partners such as non-profits and schools. All programs and materials are designed to support the physical and emotional safety and wellbeing of all students, as well as fun and learning. Outdoor expedition instruction requires providing instruction as well as maintaining the physical and behavioral safety for all group members while dealing with Alaskan weather, terrain, and wildlife.

Coordinate all aspects of curriculum-based programs for youth. Oversee registration, scheduling, and assessment. Perform and/or supports multiple education programs to K-12 students, especially in the winter. Coordinate and oversee technical components, including use of multiple videoconference software programs and media presentation platforms. Troubleshoot videoconference connection problems under time pressure.

Provide and perform education division support by responding to teachers via answering phones, inquiries in person, and via physical and electronic mail. This involves providing information regarding natural, historic, and cultural features and providing logistical information. Completes a variety of support functions such as statistical recording, program flyer development, prop and audio-visual maintenance/inventory, bulletin board maintenance, and other collateral duties.

Assists with managing the organization and storage of the Education Teams assets, both physical and electronic.

This is a term position with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agencys sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualification requirement by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as an instructor and assisting with developing hour to week-long youth programs in classroom and outdoor settings coordinating all aspects of curriculum-based education programs for youth, communicate with teachers via answering phones, responding to inquiries in person and via physical and electronic mail, making sales, collecting fees, and assisting with administrative support tasks. You must include hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional philanthropic religious spiritual community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands:
Typical duties and responsibilities require 8-hour workdays in an office, classroom or visitor center.

Typical assignments include extended periods of standing, speaking for long periods of time, lifting, bending, sitting and working at a computer workstation.
Incumbent must be able to lift and transport up to 35 lbs.

The work requires emotional stability, a clear speaking voice, and average agility and dexterity.

Incumbent must be able to hike moderately strenuous trails for distances of up to 6 miles and to walk off-trail on uneven, rough terrain for shorter distances.
Incumbent must be able to tent camp in remote areas lacking basic services for up to 10 days at a time.

Incumbent must be able to perform work duties safely in a variety of outdoor conditions, including rain, snow, wind, cold, heat, stinging and biting insects, rough terrain, large and potentially dangerous wildlife, etc.

Incumbent must be able to work safely and effectively under stressful conditions such as those due to large numbers of students, complex staffing arrangements, and logistical complexities. Incumbent must be able to work up to 16 hours per day for up to 10 days at a time on an occasional basis.
Incumbent must be able to sit and/or stand for up to 8 hours at a time.

Incumbent must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle, including in inclement weather and difficult road conditions.

Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Programs may be conducted in all seasons of the year and in a range of weather and environmental conditions.

The majority of work takes place indoors in visitor center, classroom, or office settings. Office work is typically sedentary, involving sitting and using a computer in a modern office environment. Workspace is usually shared with other employees. Other work may be in classrooms or visitor centers.

Work duties entail working with a range of group sizes from a few individuals to 100 people at a time.

Multi-day/multi-night programs require staying in rustic accommodations – including small tents – for multiple days/nights and in remote areas lacking cell phone service, restaurants and stores, medical facilities, running water/flush toilets and other amenities.
