Director of Programming FLYNN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, LTD. Full-time/exempt $90-100k / Annually

ABOUT THE FLYNN
The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is Northern New England’s premiere performing arts center. The Flynn offers a wide range of cultural and educational experiences and nurtures the creative development of performing artists. Our facilities include a 1,411-seat proscenium auditorium (Flynn Main Stage), a 180-seat black box cabaret space (Flynn Space), two education studios, a gallery with rotating exhibits of regional artists, and adjoining lobbies.
The Flynn hosts over 200 performances and over 50 camps and classes annually. Regularly scheduled performances include the Flynn season, which features world-class music, Broadway, theater, dance, and family performances on our Main Stage, with additional touring shows added throughout the year and weekday matinees presented through our Student Matinee Series, in addition to the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. The Flynn also provides a performance venue for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Lyric Theatre, and other local arts organizations.

Basic Function
A versatile and people-oriented professional, the Director of Programming ensures a positive, welcoming, and inclusive community. The Director of Programming is responsible for booking the Flynn’s annual Main Stage performance lineup while supporting the presentation of performances and events to ensure overall quality and success within financial guidelines and strategic goals. This position works across departments to apply professional project management principles, budgetary acumen, curatorial insights, and communication skills to successfully guide artistic initiatives, organizational events, and community focused projects. The Director of Programming builds audiences and fosters artistic and community relationships that support the Flynn’s mission and elevates the organization’s visibility across a variety of platforms. While being intellectually curious and eager to engage in dialogue with stakeholders, partners, audiences, scholars, and visitors.

Characteristic Duties &amp Responsibilities Actively support the Flynn’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work across the institution Book, plan, and execute the Flynn’s Main Stage programming efforts. Components of the job include, but are not limited to: artist relations and development, project management, contract preparation, budget management, and public relations for the program Oversee the day-to-day Engagement Team initiatives from booking through settlement. Develop budgets, negotiate deal points, administer contracts, determine base and dynamic pricing strategies, manage expenses, and execute settlements Build and maintain outreach and relationships with agents, managers, community, and industry leaders Achieve annual financial goals by developing and maintaining new and existing relationships with agents, managers, artists, and promoters Manage booking and contract process for Flynn-presented events including the student matinee series Develop program narratives, objectives, and budgets for funding proposals, working closely with the Director of Development Work with the Director of Marketing and Sales to set ticket prices and ticket goals, and do reach target audiences, using data collection to evaluate progress and performance With the Director of Finance develop an annual programming budget including artist fees, event expenses and equipment. Provide monthly financial forecasting for all performances and events. Create and give programming reports and presentations as needed to the full staff and the Board of Directors. Protect ethical and legal interests through contracts, insurance and financial procedures Provide excellent customer service, with a sincere belief that the actions of the Flynn staff are a direct reflection of the Flynn itself Other duties as necessary

Supervision Exercised
Oversees the work of the performance manager.

Supervision Received
Reports to the executive director. Works as part of the Engagement Team which includes programming, education, community, producing, and community outreach.

Qualifications

The ability to recognize different perspectives, with sincere interest in divergent voices and options, and to readily respond and adapt to changes with minimal resistance Personal Accountability – The willingness to self-evaluate, recognize and learn from mistakes, and use feedback for personal and performance improvement Leadership and Teamwork – The ability to articulate a vision and create a sense of purpose to inspire internal and external stakeholders, demonstrate respect and integrity, and create an environment where team members are appreciated and supported Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in a supervisory role particularly with respect to managing and maintaining budgets and ticket sales analytics Demonstrated understanding of and passion for the performing arts and live entertainment industry Ability to see the larger perspective and identify the Flynn’s long term best interest High level of organization and attention to detail with excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize Ability to have fun, stay calm, and work with others in a sometimes stressful, fast paced, energetic environment High level of computer and budgeting literacy applicants should have proficiency in working with Microsoft Office, Google Docs and other relevant software
