Position Summary Reporting to the Chief of External Relations, the Director of Editorial & Media Relations is responsible for guiding strategic internal and external communication to protect and promote UNO’s brand.
This position is responsible for critical office media relations functions, including identification of earned media opportunities, development of relationships with journalists, tracking of media mentions and evaluation of Return on Investment (ROI) for strategically beneficial stories. This position also guides editorial content creation and project manages all editorial requests and projects for MarComm. This position serves as a point person for media requests, including during emergencies or crisis events. The Director will support the CER and Chief Compliance Officer during crisis communication by crafting internal and external communications.
Strong editorial writing skills are essential to this position.
The Director of Editorial will oversee a team that has specific oversight into the areas of editorial and content creation.
The Director will work closely with CER and MarComm staff working in the areas of Digital Communications, Marketing, and Events to ensure unified messaging.
The Director provides assistance for executive level communication as needed.
Job Duties Responsibility Area: Media Relations and Reputation Management
Duties: Direct the daily media relations and reputation management operations of UNO MarComm, including:
1) Strategic media outreach
2) Responding to requests from local, national and international media outlets
3) Collecting of information and guiding university response for incidents posing reputational risk to UNO
4) Produce, coordinate and distribute media kits
Percentage Of Time 40

Duties: Oversee MarComm’s editorial support in alignment with campus priorities set forth year-over-year.

Responsibility Area: Collaboration with College Communicators
Duties: Foster continued collaboration with college communicators to help develop stories in support of overall campus strategies and/or special projects for the UNO website. Facilitate regular meetings to disseminate and strategically share content through UNO’s channels.

Responsibility Area: Crisis Communication
Duties: Support crafting of crisis communication messaging for the university as an institution or impacted campus units.

Duties: Indirectly provide communication support to members of executive leadership, including talking point development, and occasional ghostwriting for high profile events and or incidents.

Required and Preferred Qualifications Required Education Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
Required Experience Minimum of four years’ progressive professional experience in public relations, media relations, public affairs and/or journalism/mass communications.
2 years of experience professional writing experience.
