Position Summary

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) owns and operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies to promote the organizations communication goals and objectives. They create and distribute internal and external communications materials, including press releases, newsletters, social media posts, e-mail communications and website content. Additionally, they may assist with media relations, organizing events, and coordinating public relations efforts. The Communications Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive public image and ensuring consistent messaging across various communication channels.

Line of Authority

The Communications Specialist reports directly to the Director of Communications.

Functional Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

  • Develop and implement communication assets inclusive of science, outreach programs, internal and external events.
  • Utilize traditional and digital communication tools to share information and engage various audiences.
  • Lead, produce and place social media content for all SURF entities.
  • Create and manage a social media content calendar inclusive of multiplatform social channel engagement.
  • Apply analytics to generate reports for social media platforms, making recommendations for improved online engagement and growth strategies.
  • Lead planning and development of email communication strategies employed across the organization.
  • Produce compelling copy for digital platforms, outreach materials and newsletters.
  • Manage multiple email marketing databases and analyze email engagement.
  • Work with Director of Communications to guide design, production, and distribution of collateral materials to aid Education and Outreach, The Institute, the Foundation, Neutrino Day and the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center (SLHVC).
  • Practice and comply with all brand standards, legal regulations, SURF policies and social platform policies.
  • Assist with media relations, organizing events, and coordinating public relations efforts.
  • All other job related duties as assigned.

Accountabilities

The Communications Specialist has the following accountabilities:

  • To the Director of Communications in carrying out effective communication efforts.
  • To the SDSTA to favorably position the SURF brand internally and externally.


Authorities

The Communications Specialist has the following authorities.

  • To work with SDSTA departments and directors to determine traditional, digital media, and general communication needs.
  • To advise on best practices for traditional and digital media communications at SDSTA/SURF.
Requirements:

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or relevant field preferred.

Experience

  • Two to four years’ experience with traditional communication methods, digital media platforms and email communication tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Expertise in developing and carrying out communication strategies and generating reports.
  • Strong understanding of social media analytics tools.
  • Strong writing, editing and research skills.
  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud Applications.

Working Requirements

  • Proof of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Comply with SURF’s safety program.

  • Perform work in a typical office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Perform work in the SURF underground environment at depths up to 4,850 feet.
  • Perform limited physical labor and light lifting including walking up and down flights of stairs.
