Nature of Work
This position assists in performing technical work in the enforcement of various applicable national, state, and local laws, codes, and ordinances relating to health, zoning, and environmental regulations.
Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties
  • Enforces applicable national, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and other regulations by issuing warnings and written notices of violations.
  • Works with Police and Fire Departments to issue notices of life safety violations.
  • Responds to noise complaints during and after work hours.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from the general public.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from other City departments.
  • Conducts field inspections of new and existing businesses, buildings, structures, premises, and marine related facilities.
  • Responds to property maintenance complaints.
  • Responds to zoning complaints.
  • Responds to City Code complaints.
  • Responds to marine complaints.
  • Responds to or assists other departments in responding to and resolving complex issues and problems.
  • Testifies in courts and at other hearings in the prosecution of violators and offenders.
  • Prepares testimony, compiles evidence, and structures cases for prosecution.
  • Prepares and maintains records, reports, and correspondence.
  • Reports suspected or known violations of other regulations to appropriate agencies.
  • Reviews plans and applications to determine compliance with acceptable codes, ordinances, and procedures.
  • Determines conformity with acceptable standards and approved plans.
  • Recommends methods, materials, equipment, and alterations to assist in compliance with acceptable standards.
  • Computes fines and fees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Associates Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time experience will be prorated.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with an acceptable driving record.
  • Shift work includes nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Possess or obtain Level 1 certification from the Florida Association of Code Enforcement within 12 months of appointment.
Physical Requirements:
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather.

  • Reports to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach
