Position Purpose
In collaboration with the General Counsel and four other attorneys, the Associate General Counsel works on a broad array of higher education legal issues. The position provides advice and representation in business, financial, regulatory, and other matters, litigation management, policy formulation and training, and oversight of outside counsel. The successful candidate will: analyze and manage complex matters in a timely effective manner exercise excellent judgment communicate effectively with high-level College officials and stakeholders manage outside counsel in a cost-effective manner demonstrate initiative to identify and address programmatic and operational issues and advance the mission of the College and the OGC to foster diversity, equity, and inclusivity in access to opportunities both within OGC and throughout the larger Dartmouth community.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • JD from nationally recognized law school with excellent academic credentials in law school and undergraduate studies.
  • Membership in the New Hampshire bar or admission within 12 months of employment.
  • Five or more years of law practice experience in areas related to the above responsibilities, demonstrating continuous growth, with a record of leadership and/or focus in complex transactions and/or litigation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Seven years of law practice in an academic environment preferred.
  • Strong academic background with excellent analytical, advocacy, problem-solving, and case management skills.
  • Excellent writing and client communications skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse client representatives in complex environment.
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion.

Key Accountabilities
Description
Provides advice and opinions to College administrators in a wide variety of areas, with a focus on business transactions, student affairs, employment and labor law, sponsored research, and compliance with safety, health and other federal and state laws and regulations applicable to activities and programs of the College. Staffs College committees in these areas upon request.

Description
Represents or coordinates representation of College in proceedings before administrative agencies relating to discrimination in employment or educational programs, environmental law, and other matters.

Description
Manages assigned College litigation matters. Serves as liaison with outside counsel, coordinates and conducts internal case preparation efforts and research activities, develops strategies, authorizes billings for service and drafts discovery responses. Advises administrators on the handling and resolution of disputes involving the College.

Assists College risk management personnel in review and management of open claims and in policy/procedure modifications. Works with others to identify areas of legal risk to address through policy formulation and delivery of training. Supports stakeholder groups engaged in formulating College policies that involve legal issues.
