AFI Investigator Job in Kansas Department of Agriculture
Position Summary & Responsibilities:

INVESTIGATIONS: This position will complete investigations which will be done in response to complaints, unsatisfactory inspections, and incidences of non-compliance with the Kansas Pet Animal Act. They can be accomplished using on-site visits with inspectors, interviews, and research using various sources (internet, social media, and advertisements). The success of this position will be reliant on developing relationships with local authorities, associated response agencies, as well as pet animal industry stakeholders. The investigator position will work closely with the other inspectors, Kansas Animal Health Commissioner, Animal Facilities Inspection Program Director, and the KDA Legal Department. This position will be expected to coordinate and collaborate with the AFI Inspectors in efforts to accomplish the required inspections and investigations in the most efficient and responsive manner.
This position will develop competency in the proper assessment procedures relating to the health, safety, and welfare of animals. Such education includes the importance and benefits derived from good husbandry practices. Develop knowledge and relations with other agencies and departments to facilitate the exchange of key information that may either fall within or outside the jurisdiction of the investigator.
This position will perform occasional pet animal facility inspections if needed.
LEGAL SUPPORT: This position will prepare investigation plans, identify parties of interest, drafting interview questions, conduct interviews, and complete required documentation.
This position will develop a plan of action based on the information gathered. Evaluation will be done for each open investigation or complaint to determine jurisdiction under the Kansas Pet Animal Act.
This position will collaborate and work with KDA Legal to collect evidence, process serve, institute proper legal action, attend court hearings, and provide testimony as necessary.
REPORT WRITING: This position will be responsible for complete and accurate documentation of inspections, investigations, activity logs, and other agency forms consistent with daily responsibilities. Reports can include all or a combination of written reports, photographs, videos, and verbal testimony. In addition, the investigator will become familiar with the USAHerds database and maintain the investigation and inspection reports within this database.
DRIVING: The investigator is required to maintain a satisfactory driving record to ensure a valid Kansas Drivers License. This position will drive to pet animal facilities to perform the duties required of investigations.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES: This position requires occasional public speaking, presentations, conferences, and exchange of information through contacts of related organizations regarding the Kansas Pet Animal Act. Other agency support duties as assigned by the Kansas Animal Health Commissioner. Cross train with the Animal Facilities Inspectors to learn their role in Kansas Pet Animal Act enforcement.

Pay: $40,000.00 – $46,000.00 per year
