Job Description : Position Number 675 Division Student Advocacy Department Student Affairs Job Description The Advocacy Counselor utilizes counseling skills in individual meetings with students to support their development of academic and life skills. This position consults with faculty and staff regarding students of concern participates in the development of psychoeducational workshops, mental health awareness events and other outreach programs for students, staff and faculty. The Counselor works as a member of campus and college to address students of concern.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS :

Student Support.
  • Provides short-term, non-therapeutic support to students with personal (social, emotional, and career) issues that are affecting their performance in college.
  • Provides case management for students of concern including outreach, advocacy, and assistance in accessing resources and navigating college systems.
  • Manages the readmission process for students returning from academic suspension and/or dismissal.
  • Evaluates and assesses students in crisis on campus and provide appropriate intervention and referral.

Faculty / Staff Support.
  • Serves as a point of contact for faculty and staff who are seeking consultation and advice about services for students who seem to be experiencing distress.

Workshops, Trainings, and Events.
  • Develops and facilitates education, training, and consultation services for faculty and staff on how to respond and manage students of concern, including how and when to make appropriate referrals.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of education and prevention programming for students (drug and alcohol use, the prevention of sexual violence and on other related personal and community wellness topics).
  • Attend work activities or programs as scheduled or assigned.

Continuous Improvement.
  • Participates in program development and improvement of services for students.
  • Manages all processes related to advocacy referrals and readmission from suspension or dismissal.
  • Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
Engagement.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of college and community resources to provide outreach events and services to students.
  • Works closely with the college’s Student Intervention Team to provide coordination of services to students of concern and supporting students in crisis and provide appropriate intervention and referral.

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

1. Knowledge of student services procedures and environment.
2. Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other college supported systems.
3. Knowledge of FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title IX, Clery, and Violence Against Women Act.
4. Advanced oral and written communication skills and excellent listening, spelling, grammar, and editing abilities.
5. Strong strategic planning, organizational and record keeping skills as well as troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
6. Ability to utilize the principles and practices of effective counseling.
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to effectively handle sensitive situations.
8. Ability to work with a variety of clients and relate to student situations.
9. Ability to work well with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.
10. Ability to maintain professionalism, patience and understanding in stressful situations.
11. Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.

Required Qualification Master’s with minimum 18 graduate semester in counseling. Preferred Qualifications Post-secondary education with community college experience preferred. Physical Demands Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
